TV: MAMMA MIA! Turns 10 on Broadway! A Look Back at Opening Night

Today, the international hit musical MAMMA MIA! celebrates its 10th year on Broadway. MAMMA MIA! opened at Broadway's Winter Garden Theatre on October 18, 2001, and has become one of the most successful musicals of all time anywhere in the world. In September of this year, MAMMA MIA! became the 10th longest running show in Broadway history and MAMMA MIA! The Movie is the most successful live musical film of all time.

In celebration of its accomplishments, the cast will be treating New Yorkers to a special live performance. After the curtain falls today, the party will spread into the street, where the cast will deliver a special encore show.

In anticipation of the big day, BroadwayWorld takes you back 10 years to the show's starry opening night with a look back from a special Broadway Beat, which was guest-hosted by Richard Jay-Alexander. Revisit the fun below! Looking back, Jay-Alexander says "Wow!!! Ten Years for MAMMA MIA! Or, as I like to call it, WHO'S YOUR DADDY? The show deserves that kind of residence here on Broadway in one of the most prestigious theatres on Broadway - the Winter Garden. It's still one of the most FUN shows you can go to - no matter where in the world you see it - even if it's in another language. It's brought a lot of joy and a lot of dancing to a lot of people and I'm sure will continue to do so. I remember that Opening Night as though it were yesterday and I think you can see the evening's excitement in the BROADWAY BEAT video. I had a blast and it was an honor and a pleasure to host the show, which happened as a result of bidding on the opportunity to host a segment of BROADWAY BEAT at the BC/EFA Flea Market.
