Former Saturday Night Live funny-girl Cheri Oteri celebrated her opening night in Off-Broadway's NEWSical The Musical on Dec 9th where she is appearing with in the award-winning musical through the end of the month. BroadwayWorld's Randy Rainbow was on the scene at her big opening and you can check out interviews with Oteri and her guests below!
NEWSical The Musical is the forever changing, completely un-sanitized musical mockery of all the news that's fit to spoof. From Lindsay Lohan in Liz and Dick to the aftermath of the 2012 Presidential Election, NEWSical sets all of today's biggest pop culture headlines to song. Earlier this fall, celebrity gossip guru Perez Hilton joined the show for a limited run, followed by Broadway's original Annie, Andrea McArdle. Comedian Cheri Oteri is the latest guest star to take the raucous stage.
Cheri Oteri starred on Saturday Night Live from 1995-2000. She was a third of the so-called "SNL female power trio" that also included Molly Shannon and Ana Gasteyer. On SNL, she was known for playing myriad characters, including "Arianna", one half of the "Spartan Cheerleaders alongside Will Ferrell; "Rita DelVecchio" the Italian lady who policed the street from her front yard; and "Nadine", a testy constantly ordered everyone to "Simma down now!" Her fame was also bolstered by her dead-on impressions of Mariah Carey, Robin Byrd, Judge Judy, and perhaps her most famous, Barbara Walters, which she will be reprising in NEWSical.
Since leaving SNL, Oteri received an Emmy nomination for her work on Just Shoot Me, Curb Your Enthusiasm, and most recently The New Normal. She appeared in such films as Scary Movie, Inspector Gadget, Liar Liar, and can soon be seen in Bad Parents (with Janeane Garafolo) and Grown Ups 2 (with Adam Sandler, Kevin James, David Spade, and Chris Rock).
NEWSical The Musical features Christine Pedi, Michael West, Tommy Walker, Susan Mosher, Emily McNamara, and Ryan Knowles. The creative team includes Tom D'Angora (producer), Rick Crom (creator and writer), Mark Waldrop (director), Ed Goldshneider (music director), Jason Courson (set design), and Ryan Obermeier (stage manager). NEWSical The Musical won the award of "Best New Musical" at the 2011 Off-Broadway Alliance Awards.
