Cutting-Edge Composers is particularly excited about this week's composer, Zoe Sarnak, because we are presenting a concert of her musical, A Lasting Impression, this Saturday night at Joe's Pub!
When we asked Zoe about where the idea for her piece came from, she told us "I wrote A Lasting Impression at a time in my career when I was struggling to understand what would make my work have worth to others, and perhaps more importantly have worth to me. Living in this community can be a strange mix of constant interaction and recurring isolation. We take in inspiration and then try to make sense of it. Thinking about that process became the seed of my idea. At the same time I was thinking a lot about parents and siblings and the intricacies of those relationships. That informed a lot of the narrative itself. A Lasting Impression became a story of love and family, transmitted through the lens of music and art."
Sarnak is a composer, lyricist and playwright. She wrote the book, music and lyrics for The Quad, developed and performed at Harvard's Loeb Experimental Theatre. Sarnak has four full-length musicals in development, includingMixtape, featured in Silent Street Productions' 2012 season,PainLess (with book by Michael Kimmel) and A Lasting Impression, winner of Pace New Musicals 2012, performed Off-Broadway at the 4th Street Theatre at NYTW in August 2012, and winner of 2013 NJ Playwright's contest .www.zoesarnak.com. @zoesarnak.
