Happy Summer, everyone! In honor of the solstice, CEC is pleased to bring you this video of "Boy of My Own" by Charlie Sohne and Tim Rosser from our concert at Joe's Pub:
Charlie let us know about the origin of this song: "This song is from a show, The Boy Who Danced On Air, which focuses on a tradition in Afghanistan called Bacha Bazi: wealthy men take in poorer boys and train them to dance. The boys perform at parties and are often sexually abused by the men. The show tells the story of what happens when two of those boys fall in love.
While doing research for the project, we came across an interview with a young dancing boy who was describing in detail how he would treat his own dancing boy when he grew up. We found it so striking that bacha bazi was such a unremarkable fact of life for this kid that his future naturally included owning a dancing boy of his own. The rest of the song flowed from that jumping off point."
Charlie Sohne and Tim Rosser have written The Profit of Creation (Yale Institute for Music Theater 2011, ASCAP's Johnny Mercer Program 2010), Political Speeches (Culture Project's Impact Series 2012), The Boy Who Danced On Air (The Lark's Monthly Meeting of the Minds 2012, Lark Roundtable 2012, Rodgers Award Finalist 2013) among others.
