How do measure a year in your life? Now you can discovr new ways to do it with the cast of RENT, which premiered last night in Sao Paulo. Four-time Tony Winner, RENT is an Off-Broadway musical about eight teenagers who have to face the adventures and misadventures of their loves, friendships, conflicts, financial problems, sexuality and the clash with human finitude. More than a musical, RENT is a chain of love.

In the Brazilian production, Mark is played by Bruno Narchi and Thiago Machado lives Roger. For the adored couple, Myra Ruiz is Maureen and Priscila Borges is Joanne. Mimi is played by Ingrid Gaigher. Also joins the cast as one of the eight characters Max Grácio, Diego Montez and Mauro Sousa.

Different from RENT as we know it, the brazilian production took a shot at starting from literally nothing, just from the script and character building, instead of starting from the final result that we're used to see in every "franchise" of the show. Thereby, as was said in the press conference, the characters profiles, costumes and scenic design are different from the original production. Basically an "update", as Bruno Narchi said to the press.

These factors raised some questioning about diversity in the cast among RENT lovers. It is, indeed, a challenge and a great opportunity to surprise theater-goers with the brazilian way of making musicals. Not only original local productions, but also the Broadway ones could reflect some of the Brazilian identity.

Did they succeed in their proposal of doing something different with RENT? All that's left for us to do is go see the show. Below, you can watch (in portuguese) the cast inviting you to see the show and singing the song I'll Cover You (Reprise) in the press conference.
