Last year, BroadwayWorld.com, the largest theater website on the Internet, launched a comprehensive Student Database listing college and university performing arts programs across the country. This free service makes it easier for prospective students by showcasing programs searchable by schools, location, degrees and concentrations.
With the new school year in full gear, BWW has updated the fully-interactive Student Show Calendar with 2011-2012 student productions. We have also made it easy for schools to upload photos, videos, cast lists, articles and other media content for each of their shows. In addition, BWW will be combing through all content regularly and will launch weekly feature stories highlighting productions locally and nationally that have provided us with this extra content.
Today, BWW is thrilled to introduce you to the latest school in our Spotlight series, Muhlenberg College! Situated in Allentown, Pennsylvania, the Department of Theatre and Dance at Muhlenberg College offers a Bachelor of Arts degree in Theatre (concentrations available in Acting and Directing), a Bachelor of Arts degree in Dance (concentrations in Performance and Choreography) and a Bachelor of Arts in Design and Technology where students can opt between production design and stage management. Students enrolled in all programs are exposed to a rich, intensive studio experience which immerses them in performance and design, and is complemented by courses in history, theory and literature of stage performance.
Also offered at Muhlenberg is a Musical Theatre program whereby students receive acting and dance instruction through the Theatre & Dance Department, and also take voice and other musical training through the college's Music Department. Each summer, the Musical Theatre program hosts an exciting production season that comes together with the support of students, faculty, and guest artists. Slated for this year are 'Hairspray, 'H.M.S. Pinafore', and 'Harold & the Purple Crayons'. For more information on the Musical Theatre program and its upcoming shows, click here.
The Department's Mainstage production season attracts students who are eager to apply their skills and talents and who are also interested in being part of the creative process, from choreographing performances to designing and stage-managing produced works. Past shows at Muhlenberg include 'The Tempest', 'Orlando', 'La Dispute', 'Merrily We Roll Along' and 'Stop Kiss'. Opening next week is William Shakespeare's 'A Midsummer Night's Dream' directed by Beth Schachter and running from March 28 thru April 1 in the Studio Theatre. 'Dance Emerge', a showcase of original works by student choreographers, will premiere on April 19, and Sarah Ruhl's new adaptation of Chekhov's classic work 'The Three Sisters' will play from April 26 to 29.
