Last year, BroadwayWorld.com, the largest theater website on the Internet, launched a comprehensive Student Database listing college and university performing arts programs across the country. This free service makes it easier for prospective students by showcasing programs searchable by schools, location, degrees and concentrations.

With the new school year in full gear, BWW has updated the fully-interactive Student Show Calendar with 2011-2012 student productions. We have also made it easy for schools to upload photos, videos, cast lists, articles and other media content for each of their shows. In addition, BWW will be combing through all content regularly and will launch weekly feature stories highlighting productions locally and nationally that have provided us with this extra content.

Today, BWW heads to Washington, DC, where The Department of Performing Arts at the American University (AU) is the recipient of this week's School in the Spotlight mention!

Helmed by Carl Menninger, Director of the Theatre and Musical Theatre Program, the Department of Performing Arts provides a rich education in the arts and offers a range of disciplines including Arts Management, Audio Technology, Dance, Music, Theatre and Musical Theatre. Students pursuing the Bachelor of Arts in Musical Theatre or Theatre can select a track in Performance, Design and Technical Theatre, or Arts Management. In addition to its undergraduate programs, AU also offers a graduate studies option with a Master of Arts in Arts Management which equips students with the skills and knowledge required to enter the arts administration sector in various capacities. For more information on the MA in Arts Management, click here.

Students thrive in the many performance opportunities available at the school, with groups in choral/vocal, instrumental, jazz, dance, theatre and musical theatre showcasing their talents in presentations throughout the year. As the 2011-2012 production season nears its close, the department will stage the award-winning musical comedy 'The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee'. The cast of 'Spelling Bee' includes Erin Hannigan, Matthew Rubbelke, Amy Wilson, Logan Sutherland, Eddie Leavy, Julie Nolan, Jennifer Christine, Paul Lysek, and Anthony O'Tapi. The show opened last night (Thursday, March 29) and continues tonight (Friday, March 30) at 8pm through Saturday, March 31, at 2pm & 8pm at the Harold and Sylvia Greenberg Theatre. Tickets are $15 for regular admission and $10 for AU community and seniors. Click here for more information.
