LA CAGE AUX FOLLES is the ninth show to be presented by Florida's newest venue, The Wick Theatre in Boca Raton. The production, featuring live musicians, has opened to rave reviews and stars Lee Roy Reams (who stops the show cold), Walter Charles and an equally skillful cast.
When Marilyn Wick bought the dormant Caldwell Theatre in Boca Raton, back in 2013, to house over 1.2 million costumes, (many of them Broadway originals), she also re-opened the 340 seat theatre, presenting real Broadway productions in a perfect and intimate location with her daughter and Production Artistic Director, Kimberly Wick.
A huge added plus is that everyone leaves these productions saying that the costumes in every single show are extraordinary. We learned over the weekend that she recently added, to her enormous collection, 3 'Milky Whites', which get booked out every single week into productions of Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine's INTO THE WOODS around the country.
The theater won SIX 2014 BroadwayWorld.com MIAMI Awards, including 5 for AIN'T MISBEHAVIN' (Phillip Boykin as Best Actor, Shirley Tripp as Best Actress, Ron Hutchins as Best Choreographer and Best Director and Debra Walton as Best Featured Actress) and 1 for 42ND STREET (Gerald Michaels for Best Sound Design).
Previous productions, since the venue opened, have included MAME (starring Leslie Uggams), THE SOUND OF MUSIC, WHITE CHRISTMAS, 42ND STREET, THE FULL MONTY, STEEL MAGNOLIAS and AIN'T MISBEHAVIN'.
What Marilyn and her daughter Kimberly have done is a remarkable resurrection and we're excited to share a scoop that was revealed on stage this weekend, as Marilyn made her welcoming speech from the stage, prior to the show. It seems that they have signed the legendary musical actress Shirley Jones to play Aunt Eller in OKLAHOMA! in April. The remainder of the season also includes MAN OF LA MANCHA and DAMES AT SEA. We also learned that they are adding their first Summer season, which will include PUMP BOYS AND DINETTES and a second show.
The Costume Museum at the Wick Theatre is an astounding exhibit of the finest costumes ever brought to the Broadway stage by the most honored and respected designers in the history of the American Musical Theatre. This incredible venue houses a collection of original costumes from over 35 Broadway productions and revivals with an estimated value of more than 20 million dollars. The collection has been featured on The Today Show, in People magazine and was the subject of a spectacular photo essay in Vogue magazine by renowned photographer, Bruce Weber.
BroadwayWorld.com is planning a visit and a video shoot / interview with Marilyn and Kimberly and we look forward to bringing you a tour of the costume museum and this beautiful new theatre, which people are talking about. We hear that the lobby, itself, is an event and that audiences arrive early and stay late, for the piano, the bar and the snacks. Stay tuned!
