Yesterday Sim G Records released their latest recording, The Bakewell Bake Off - a new British musical that premiered at the Landor Theatre in October. It features a selection of MA students from the Guildford School of Acting - aptly named the Baking Committee - and is directed by their course leader, Julian Woolford. The book, lyrics and music are devised by the students, making it a very exciting project.

The show was only intended as an in-house production but due to the fantastic response, a full length musical was conceived. The musical comedy is set in the cake-mad village of Bakewell; the wit starts there and filters throughout the recording. In a nutshell, there are seven contestants, three judges, a presenter and it follows the local baking competition. The concept is very topical at the moment with the popularity of 'The Great British Bakeoff' and it is a very entertaining listen.

The characters all seem to have a solid back story and their individual personas shine through the musical numbers. Kevin Michael Cripps is at the helm providing musical direction and alongside Auburn Jam Music's production means a very well accomplished album.

Highlights on the album include the sultry tango rhythms of 'The Original Bakewell Tart' performed by Lucy Emmott as Tina Tartin and 'Science of Baking' with its cabaret feel by the vocally excellent Katherine Glover as Flora Drizzle. To be honest, the entire company demonstrate real skill and talent throughout, particularly in 'When We Find Our Tart'.

The Bakewell Bake Off is available now on iTunes and directly through SimG Productions (www.simgproductions.com)
