BWW Recap: SUPERGIRL's Friends are All 'Changing' on this Week's Episode

Everyone surrounding Kara -- James, Winn, Alex, Mon-El, and J'onn-- went through a major life change on this week's episode of SUPERGIRL. James and Winn debuted their combined creation of The Guardian, Mon-El dealt with whether he wants to be a hero or not, and J'onn received a threatening blood transfusion. Most poignantly, Alex came out to Kara in a stunning portrayal by Chyler Leigh. Meanwhile, the DEO team battled an alien parasite that proved to be a dangerous match even for Supergirl and the Martian Manhunter. The acting in this episode, especially from Chyler and Jeremy Jordan, was truly some of the best we've seen this season.

The episode opened with Dr. Rudy Jones and his team in Norway looking at a frozen wolf that was trapped in ice for 5,000 years. Its body looks strangely intact and Dr. Jones realizes that it's still warm. When he puts his hand inside an opening on the wolf's torso, his arm gets sucked inside...this scene honestly was terrifying.

Back in National City, Kara and Mon-El are at the alien bar and Kara isn't too pleased that girls keep sending drinks to Mon-El. Mon-El is dodging Kara about getting a new job, but tells her he's found something. He flirtingly agrees that he'll let her train him to control his powers if she finishes the strong drink he got her. Watching Kara super-drunk (get it?) was one of the funniest parts of this episode.

When Alex finds Maggie at the bar, she's almost giddy with her realization that she is gay. "I mean, I'm almost 30 and I feel like a kid again," she tells her. Maggie recommends that she tells her family next, but Alex is hesitant. "This is the biggest thing that has happened to you and you shouldn't have to do it alone," Maggie says. I really loved how they dealt with Alex coming out in this episode; they showed that sometimes people don't realize that they're gay until later in life and that coming out isn't always a simple process. Also, I'm 100% a shipper of #Sanvers which I discovered seems to be the ship name for Alex and Maggie being used on social media (even Chyler Leigh used it on Instagram!).

Winn calls the agents home because of a problem and is dismayed to see Kara drunk. I thought it was so cute how annoyed Winn was when he realized that Mon-El was responsible for it. They received an SOS message from a lab in Norway, which has been placed under quarantine, which is the same lab from the beginning of the episode. Since Kara is passed out asleep, Alex and J'onn take a team to investigate.

They find most of the lab assistants dead, as though something had "sucked them dry." Dr. Rudy Jones is in shock and bleeding, but they get him back to the DEO and heal him. He's a climate change scientist intent on continuing his work and after some argument, they agree to let him go to the National City University. It's clear something is off with Dr. Jones and on his way out, a strange wormy parasite thing crawls out of his mouth and into his ear. Anyone else completely disgusted?

Kara begins training Mon-El and can I say how happy I am Chris Wood joined the cast? (The man is beautiful, okay.) She says that she wants to teach him to defend himself in case he decides that he wants to make a difference one day like she does. However, they're interrupted by Alex who wants to talk to Kara.

The scene in which Alex comes out to Kara was amazing because of Chyler's acting and the lovely writing that made it seem very real. I appreciate that they've made her sexuality a facet of her character, instead of her entire character like some TV shows seem to do. Kara initially has a difficult time accepting the news and asks if she's ever felt that way about a girl before. Alex responds to Kara's skepticism by revealing that she thinks she's had feelings like this her entire life but has always repressed them. Kara asks her if Maggie returns her feelings, but Alex is done with the conversation and leaves.

Dr. O'Reilly comes into the lab where Dr. Jones is working to tell him that he should rest. He warns that humans are killing the planet through global warming and must be stopped or the end of the world will occur. Dr. O'Reilly calls him obsessive and fires him, which doesn't go over well.

Winn finds a video showing what occurred in the lab in the first scene of the episode. It shows that Dr. Jones killed the other lab assistants with magical powers; he was infected by the parasite, which has taken his body as a host. Alex and Kara go to the lab to find Dr. Jones, but he claims that humans are ruined the world and warns, "You can't stop us." When he touches Kara, he seems to draw energy from her before escaping into the city.

Back at the DEO, Winn explains that it's an alien parasite that got stuck during the Ice Age. The more energy Dr. Jones absorbs, the more powerful he becomes. Kara is clearly shaken from the fight, but says that they've got it under control when James offers to help.

Winn and James get into a fight with James yelling, "Kara almost died, Winn." When Winn responded, "You think I don't know that? Get out of here," I was reminded that the two share a special bond as the two men who love Kara the most. Even James admits, "I know I don't hold the copyright for caring for Kara." When James insists that he needs his superhero suit right away, Winn stands up for himself insisting that he's the best in his field and can't be bossed around.

Honestly, I felt like this scene proved how much Winn has grown since Season 1 when he was the dorky IT guy in the cardigan with a crush on Kara. He's learned his own value and how to stand up for himself. During the first season, I sometimes felt like Jeremy Jordan's acting skills were wasted on Winn who appeared to be a fairly simple, if hilarious character. But this scene showed Winn's depth and reminded me more of the incredible acting that Jeremy showed in Newsies or The Last Five Years movie. I am always heartbroken by Jeremy's performance of a man who is still in love with Kara and has to watch her with all of her new love interests.

Al ex asks Kara why she's been weird since she came out to her. Kara insists that she isn't disappointed, but is completely okay with it. She actually feels guilty "for not creating an environment where you felt like you could talk about this with me." She tells Alex that while she doesn't know exactly what she's going through, she understands what it's like to have to hide a part of yourself. "And I know how lonely that can make you feel," she says, "But Alex, you are not alone." I loved this beautiful moment between the Danvers sisters which is what has been at the heart of the show since the very beginning. This show has always been a beautiful piece about family and being true to yourself, so the fact that it's now spreading a message about acceptance for the LGBT community makes me so happy.

Kara finds Mon-El using his powers "as muscle for hire" for another alien. When she insists that he can't use his powers to earn money, he challenges her. He insists that he doesn't want to be a hero like she is and tells her, "You're no saint, Kara Zor-El." He says that she loves the attention as much as she loves doing good (yes, I immediately thought of "No Good Deed"). Somehow throughout all this tension, I kept expecting them to kiss. Don't get me wrong, Winn is still my favorite, but I do love Mon-El.

Kara and J'onn trick Dr. Jones into meeting them and they fight. By taking power from them both, he transforms into a massive six foot parasite. After bringing them back to the DEO, Alex admits that she's worried that they can't handle the parasite without them. James, Winn, and Mon-El all are distraught despite Alex's reassurances that Kara will recover eventually. However, Alex realizes that she needs to ask M'Gann for a blood transfusion in order to save J'onn who has lost a lot of blood.

Winn takes James to his new suit as seeing Kara and J'onn hurt appears to have changed his mind. Before giving it to him, he warns him, "I need you to make sure you are sure. This will be the end of James Olsen, full stop. You do this, you are someone else." Seriously, when did Winn become the smartest person on this entire show? James responds, "This is who I am. I can't hide behind my camera anymore. If there's a cost, I'll pay it." I have to commend the writers for this episode because it was truly magnificent.

Alex finds Mon-El at the alien bar and fusses at him for not helping. "Why don't you go believe in somebody else?" he taunts her. She insists that while she doesn't believe in him, Kara does and that's why she gets upset with him. She gives him a stern lecture (classic older sister) and Mon-El actually seems shaken by it.

Alex brings M'Gann back to the DEO and tells her that J'onn will die without a blood transfusion from her. She's obviously reluctant (and no wonder since she's not a real Green Martian), but agrees to do it anyways.

Meanwhile, Mon-El fights the parasite monster (I knew he had it in him), until James shows up in his new super suit, which kind of reminds me of a Power Ranger. He finally states his superhero name: The Guardian, which seems very fitting for James. Winn is in a truck nearby giving James directions into an earpiece. Did anyone else think of Riley in National Treasure? James's shield actually works against the parasite and he manages to fight back against it.

Kara suddenly wakes up and when Alex tells her that Mon-El is fighting the monster alone, she rushes off to help him. Kara's crazy plan actually works and Winn broke my heart when he excitedly said, "That's my girl!" when she showed up. Kara makes the parasite man combust, which obviously impresses Mon-El. Kara walks over to the Guardian and asks him who he is, but he only responds "A friend" before riding away on his motorcycle. Very smooth, James, very smooth.

Jam es watches news coverage of The Guardian while holding an ice pack on his head when Winn approaches him. James tells him, "We're heroes, man, just like Kara." Winn agrees to keep being the Guardian with James, but is uneasy keeping it a secret from Kara. I couldn't be more excited about the return of the Super-Friends as I've always found James and Winn's relationship compelling.

Back at the alien bar, Alex approaches Maggie. When she kissed her, I absolutely screeched with joy, but my heart broke when Maggie rejected her. While Maggie may have had a point that she and Alex are at different places in their lives, seeing Alex cry to Kara because it didn't work out was heart-wrenching.

In the last seconds of the episode, Mon-El goes to help a homeless man who attacks him and then hauls him into a waiting van, driven by the lady from Cadmus. Never before have I wished so much that Supergirl was a Netflix series and I could immediately watch the next episode.

Is J'onn going to be affected by M'Gann's blood? Will Mon-El be okay and how will Kara react to him being kidnapped? What does the future hold for the Guardian? Don't forget to tune back in next week for another episode of Supergirl and check back for my next recap.
