Let's face it. In the last 24 hours, life hasn't been the best for us Americans. But who says we can't get away from it for a while and take a break with our favorite Sutton Foster-led TVLand series? This week's installment finds the Aubrey Alexis manuscript getting a sales boost that puts Liza in a tricky situation, Kelsey may or may not find herself a new man, new developments unravel with Maggie and Malkie and oh yes, yet again, Liza and Charles avoid (and face) the wrath of Radha. Intrigued? Well, then, X out of your Trump coverage, and read on, read on:
The A-Plot: ME, MYSELF AND O, Empirical's new Aubrey Alexis "get," is selling well - so well that Alexis is invited to read at the "Ladies Who Lust" benefit hosted by the "literary icons of the sexual revolution." Desperate to save Alexis' identity from being revealed, Liza and Kelsey pitch Gwyneth Paltrow to read in her place. But when Gwenny bails because of a... well... just see for yourself, Liza is actually forced to step in.
Notice as she reads from the passage how Charles gets hot - IMO it's actually a bit creepy considering he thinks she's 26, but very telling of what's to come. Of course, Radha's giving him the stink-eye through the whole thing. Yeah.. she's definitely onto them (And not very subtle about it - "hope you don't mind that I'm taking him home." I mean, rude much???)
But luckily, Aubrey's identity is spared. So, that's a good thing, right? Right???
The B-Plot: While out at the benefit, Kelsey meets Colin McNichol, a young NEW YORKER writer who she thinks is hitting on her, despite asking straightforwardly for all of Aubrey Alexis' information to uncover the secret. They rendezvous to a room with secret archival treasures, where Colin quotes Keats' line "not so talismanic" to Kelsey.
Though their intimate moment gets interrupted by a text from Liza re: the Gwyneth debacle, Kelsey later discovers a clue in his printed article that may hint he's looking for more - he calls her a "talismanic beauty" to quote Keats' line from earlier.
She calls him on it, and he asks her out. Could this be the start of something new for her? Might do her well since the whole Lucas thing never worked out... (cue sad face).
The C-Plot: Maggie and Malkie officially call it quits this week (sad face) after Maggie becomes too overwhelmed while preparing a dinner for Malkie's Jewish friends. Though it starts out pretty great, Maggie puts up a white flag when she becomes submerged in taking care of sabbath shabbat, self-renewal retreats, high holidays, and more. :-(
I have to admit, it is kinda sad that they're done - if only because we didn't have enough time to really see this thing really blossom to its potential. Plot lines were sort of just Maggie struggling to fit in with Malkie's religion. Or... wait... could that have been the point? #lightbulb
So now, Maggie's free again? Is it back to Lauren for more?
But Also: Josh questions Liza on how many guys she's slept with before him. When her answer is less than satisfactory, he devises a plan to allow her to "explore more," giving her a "free pass" to do it with another guy (so long as he doesn't know about it). While she says she'd never use it on anyone but him, notice how she slips it into her pocket, as they walk into the bedroom... and the camera zooms in... perhaps saying they wanted us to notice she kept it? Maybe it'll be used later?? On Charles???? Hmmm....
Line of the Night: "It's difficult to keep a secret, especially when you pretend to be someone else in order to be taken seriously in your profession." I love these lines that dead-on relate to Liza's situation but are disguised in a way - and also relate to the situation at hand! Such clever, decisive writing! A+!
So... what are your thoughts? Where do you think Liza and the gang are headed next? Let us know in the comments below... and we'll see you next week! 'Til then, as always, stay YOUNGER.
