Musical Theatre educator and performer Sheri Sanders is teaming up with young trailblazer Christopher Castanho on a series of articles called "Musical Theatre: The Wild Side" The pair will talk about "tricky to discuss, but necessary" social topics through the lens of Student and Teacher in the Musical Theatre community.
"Theater is, of course, a reflection of life. Maybe we have to improve life before we can hope to improve theater." William Ralph Inge
Sheri Sanders is most known for her highly acclaimed "Rock The Audition" program, which teaches performers how to interpret popular music in order to audition for Rock musicals. Having taught at 59 Musical Theatre programs over the past four and a half years, this Hal Leonard Published Author has noticed a commonality: in using popular music as the language to communicate with, the current state of the world has had VERY mixed effects on the art form and personal expression, and education.
Christopher Castanho is currently a senior Musical Theatre major at Shenandoah Conservatory in Winchester, Virginia. Castanho is not only a performer but also a director and author: being a contributing writer for websites like BroadwayWorld.com and The Huffington Post. Having recently completed a workshop with the Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright: Stephen Adly Guirgis, he is excited to be assistant directing with Jacob Brent (Broadway's CATS) for Shenandoah's production of "Once On This Island" in April of 2017.
Sheri approached Christopher earlier this year about collaborating on "The Wild Side" as she found that they are alike in their willingness to perform, create, and ask questions.
"We are holding space exclusively on The Huffington Post, to further the conversation on crucial subject matters" adds Christopher. The duo will be interviewing people who are making an impact on the circumstances below.
"We begin our series with two subjects very near and dear to us: Sexuality, and Gender Expression in Musical Theatre. Diversity and Mental Illness will follow."
