In honor of the 69th annual Tony Awards, RISK AGAIN! has a look at nominees who got their start at the Eugene O'Neill Theater Center; shared their knowledge and talents with students of the National Theater Institute (NTI); and have been a part of the O'Neill's National Playwrights Conference (NPC), National Music Theater Conference (NMTC), or Cabaret and Performance Conference (CPC).

Special Tony Award for Lifetime Achievement in the Theatre

In addition to the nominees, the awards are co-hosted by alum Kristen Chenoweth (NMTC '97). O'Neill Board Member Ruth Hendel is doubly represented as producer on two Tony-nominated plays: THIS IS OUR YOUTH and CURIOUS INCIDENT. O'Neill Executive Director Preston Whiteway is a member of the Tony Awards nominating committee, he also teaches a producing class for students of the National Theater Institute. And three Tony-nominated shows this season boast National Theater Institute alums in their cast: DISGRACED (Josh Radnor, NTI '95), ON THE TOWN (Steven DeRossa, NTI '88), and THE ELEPHANT MAN (Scott Lowell, NTI '85, NPC '10, NPC '11).

The O'Neill itself is the recipient of two Tony Awards, 1979 for Theatrical Excellence and in 2010 for Regional Theatre (the first play development and education organization to receive this honor).


With a singular schedule and an unmatched breadth of training, the National Theater Institute's semester-long programs offer students a springboard to the professional world at the two-time Tony Award-winning Eugene O'Neill Theater Center.
