As performers we don't have the objectivity to assess our own performance. We ask each other, "how did that go?" Or "how did that feel?" But beyond the sensation we can instantly recall from our performance, we don't really know how we sounded.
Recording ourselves is a necessary step in the process. As we progress, we take the good advice from teachers and colleagues, but we need to listen back to the recording to know how we sound.
Singers need to listen to themselves. Creating the sound which resonates from within makes it impossible to listen to ourselves clearly. Perhaps this is why many of us say we hate listening to the sound of our voice: we're not used to hearing it outside of ourselves.
But for performers it's necessary because often they create a sound that they are unaware of. Sometimes there is manipulation in the sound, thinking it's one sound when in reality it is another sound altogether.
