How do we know if the song or scene we use for an audition is the right material? Actors who come to an audition, make the judgement call about what to prepare; unless that decision is made for them by the casting team, who might dictate what songs/scenes to prepare. So how do you know if the song you are bringing to the audition is working for you?

We don't. After playing another round of auditions, it's safe to say, some actors know what to sing and some don't. It's not always easy to know. You might really like a song, or have sung one for years. Something I've noticed as an accompanist, is actors who bring the same song to separate auditions.

Is the song working for you? Is it highlighting your talents, and have you booked a gig with that song? If not, perhaps the song is not working. If you're doubtful about your audition material, it's always a good idea to get a second opinion from a coach, or director, or someone's opinion you trust.
