I have been so impressed by the tremendous support and camaraderie in the Broadway community. Many from across the theater spectrum already have come to enjoy On The Town in previews. It's been inspiring to see cast members and creatives from WICKED, IF/THEN, PIPPIN, NEWSIES, AN AMERICAN IN PARIS, LITTLE DANCER, NBC's live telecast of PETER PAN, and so many others in our community excited and eager to show their support. We can always tell when our audiences are speckled with others who work on the "Great White Way". From the moment the house lights dim, a friendly buzz radiates onto the stage.
We had our first Q and A talk-back session recently. It was with a group of high school students who watched a matinee performance. One of the questions raised was, "What advice do you have for an aspiring performer such as myself?" I always love this question, especially when it comes from a young person. Our panel (made up of cast members, the choreographer, and lead producer) had a variety of insightful responses. They included: (1) see as many performances as possible; (2) get a well rounded liberal arts education; (3) never give up after getting "no" for an answer (because there's always a "yes" lurking around somewhere); and (4) most importantly, don't be a jerk. That colorful last one came from our choreographer, Josh Bergasse. He brought up a great point - no one wants to work with people who have the ability to pull others into their negative spiral. Of course we're creating and performing a show, but in doing so we're also forming a family - a close-knit group of people we work with day in and day out. It's exhilarating but also very hard work, and the negativity of a jerk certainly is not helpful nor welcome. I love our On The Town family. We have a handful of knitters (myself included), a couple bikers, a few yogis, a plate-spinning skateboarder, dog lovers, and bowling fiends. But all are passionate and dedicated to sharing On The Town with Broadway audiences.
This week, I'd like to point out the Adventures of Flossie and Saucey. Holly Butler and Lori Ann Ferreri, who play Flossie and Saucey, started trending a photo series #flossieandsaucy. It's so much fun. Check it out! Instagram: PERFORMINGPINUP
