So this week has quite possibly been the most hectic thus far in my college career. Over Spring Break, I got a facebook message from a junior BFA Acting major, Silas, asking me to read for Rosannah Deluce in his and senior BFA MT major Kelsey Aycock's production of Brilliant Traces, by Cindy Lou Johnson. I had a cold read audition with my friend Caleb Gerber, and we were cast in the show! Yay! It's in a little over a month, and is 50 pages of nonstop dialogue with a few longer monologues interspersed. So for the next few weeks, I am going to be walking around with that script in my hand doing nothing else.
The play itself is incredible, and I've never had the opportunity to dig so deep into a character. Silas and Kelsey have been supportive and helpful directors, which makes it less overwhelming, but it's a lot of work! Right after I finish this entry, I'll be heading to a 2 hour rehearsal for that, followed by rehearsal for one of the thesis films I'm acting in that shoots this weekend. We just received a second draft yesterday, so my memorization skills are being put to the test in all aspects. So many new things, since I have no film experience either. My friends Annie and Rei are the only people on set that I know extensively, so I'm fairly nervous, but it's a hilarious script, and I love my role, so I'm excited to see how it turns out, and how acting for the camera differs from the acting I'm doing with Caleb, Si, and Kelsey.
Within all of this, I have to find time to select and rehearse something for the Freshman Showcase, which is the same weekend as Brilliant Traces. Alaina and I need to rehearse our duet, but I still have two free minutes. I hoped to choreograph a short tap combo and sing "Forget About the Boy" from Thoroughly Modern Millie, but I overestimated the free time I would have to put that together since tap choreography is something new to me that takes a lot of work. It's awesome to see our class come together and work so fluidly, I'm pumped!
In other news, I found out on Friday that I booked a summer stock job at The Lost Colony! I'm ecstatic, because the uncertainty of not having plans lined up was killing me, and I started my theatre career at TLC Theatre Camp in 2009, and they introduced me to my favorite show of all time: Into the Woods. I interned there in 2014, and made a promise to return and audition again as an adult, so it feels great to follow through on that and get to re-experience it from the perspective of the adults I looked up to as a freshman in high school.
Aside from my out of class work, things are getting kicked up a notch in all of my major subjects. We begin learning our final Dance Showcase routines in both Tap and Ballet this upcoming week, and Kirsten and I need to squeeze in time to choreograph the rest of our "No Man" combination. We're about to start ear training for seventh chords in Music Theory, which is something I've always struggled with, and overall in case it's unclear, there is a lot going on. Every little section of my day is booked. But, you know what? As Claire Eye said in Voice and Articulation class on Tuesday: "That's the goal. The goal is to be exhausted all of the time". So I guess I'm doing something right.
