We've learned that "Bubbling Brown Sugar" is hoping to head back to Broadway in 2011, according to Broadway producer, Ashton Springer, who was one of the producers of the show the first time around in 1976.
The revival features the original choreography of
Billy Wilson and the original orchestrations of
Danny Holgate, which combined to make "Bubble the exuberant, foot-stomping trend-setter that set the stage for the biggest hit musicals to date." Springer says that "a new book by the acclaimed dramatist
Michael Hulett makes the new production a sure-fire 21st century classic.
"Bubble took Broadway, London, Berlin and Paris by storm when it made the rounds in the late ‘70s," says Springer noting that the Broadway and London cast albums are still big sellers. He credits the production's music and choreography for its success "back then and its sure-fire appeal now.
"Bubble is a timeless tribute to the likes of Ellington, Blake, Calloway and Holiday and evokes the elegance and excitement of the legendary Cotton Club, Small's Paradise and Savoy Ballroom. It's chock full of show-stopping numbers. Who could ask for anything more?"
The show received accolades and positive reviews wherever it played and racked up numerous international nominations and awards, including three Tony nominations in 1976.
"We're planning to tour the show out of town before bringing it back to Broadway in late fall or early winter," says Springer.
In 1970 he produced his first show, "No Place to Be Somebody," the first Off-Broadway play and first Black play to garner the prestigious Pulitzer Prize. In addition to the original Bubbling Brown Sugar, Springer produced such Broadway hits as, "Guys and Dolls," (starring
Robert Guillaume) and "Lesson from Aloes" (starring
James Earl Jones), which also received Tony Award Nominations.
