"Broken City: Wall Street," the third in a trilogy of immersive street performances by PopUP Theatrics, wraps up its successful sold-out run in the Wall Street area on Monday August 1. The three-week engagement began on Thursday, July 21 and played to audiences of 9 per hour in various locations, including the starting point, The Financier, 35 Cedar Street (bet Pearl and William Streets).
The brainchild of PopUP Theatrics, "Broken City: Wall Street" is a collaboration between directors, Tamilla Woodard, Ana Margineanu, playwright Peca Stefan, and guest choreographers, Signdance Collective, a UK-based group that developed and designed the project's movement vocabulary. Led by the artistic team of Isolte Avila and David Bower, Signdance Collective International fuses sign language with dance, theatre and live music in their work to create staggeringly beautiful performances. Real life and theatre collide in this street-immersive guided theatrical experience that cross-pollinates narrated and choreographed storytelling with the inherent theatricality of the pedestrian. Part flash mob, part walking tour with micro narration, and part participatory event, "Broken City: Wall Street" invites nine Audience members at a time to navigate three street-itineraries in which actors and stories are embedded. Spectators follow a number of characters who are integrated in the neighborhood, and at times engage with others who will often turn out to be non-actors.Written by Peca Stefan, directed by Tamilla Woodard and Ana Margineanu, with choreography by Isolte Avila and David Bower, "Broken City: Wall Street" will continue through Monday, August 1st.
