In an all-new interview with the Sydney Morning Herald, Matilda the Musical director Matthew Warchus reveals that in addition to working on the upcoming stage version of GROUNDHOG DAY, with songs by Tim Minchin, he is also in the midst of pre-production for the big screen adaptation of MATILDA, scheduled to begin filming in late 2016. No further details were revealed.

In a July interview with The Sydney Morning Herald, composer and lyricist Tim Minchin revealed he is writng additional music for the show's silver screen debut. He did not reveal details of when the film will hit theaters or who is being considered for its leading lady.
"It'll be different from what we did on stage," director Matthew Warchus told the Daily Mail of the movie adaptation back in 2013. "Matilda's imagination lends itself very much to film. We can open up her amazing acrobat stories. And there will be the conundrum of trying to capture the naughtiness and anarchy of the stage version."
Minchin's Groundhog Day is scheuled to open on Broadway in spring 2017. The composer recently appeared on CONAN and performed "When I Grow Up" from Matilda, along with three of the young stars of MATILDA. Watch the performance below:
MATILDA THE MUSICAL has now received 50 awards in Stratford-upon-Avon, London and New York, and has been seen by over three million people worldwide. Sweeping the board at the 2012 Olivier Awards, winning a record-breaking seven awards, Matilda the Musical has gone on to take Broadway by storm winning four Tony Awards and a Tony Honor for Excellence in the Theater for each of the four girls sharing the title role. During 2015, the London and Broadway productions of Matilda the Musical are joined by the US tour which opened in Los Angeles in May and the Australian premiere in Sydney this August.
Inspired by the incomparable Roald Dahl's beloved book, Matilda the Musical premiered at the Royal Shakespeare Company's The Courtyard Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon in November 2010, before transferring to London's West End in October 2011. The musical is written by playwright Dennis Kelly, with music and lyrics by comedian, musician and composer Tim Minchin, and direction by Matthew Warchus.
