The cast of the acclaimed Off-Broadway hit, Black Angels Over Tuskegee, will perform at the 2nd annual Triumph Awards on October 19th (8 p.m) at Jazz at Lincoln Center, honoring those who have made a positive impact beyond their performances on stage, in the arts, in sports, and in the community. National Action Network (NAN) and Reverend Al Sharpton will host.
This year's honorees include Tyler Perry, who is receiving the Chairman's Award for Historic and Transformative Service and Chris & Malaak Rock, who are getting the President's Award for Service and Humanitarian Efforts. Additional honorees include: Marva Smalls, Viacom, Nickelodeon, Jimmie Lee Solomon, Major League Baseball, Tina Thompson, Los Angeles Sparks, Maurice Cox, PepsiCo; Attorney General Kamala Harris, State of California, the Honorable Judge Greg Mathis.
The evening will feature a performance by the cast of Layon Gray's award winning Off-Broadway play Black Angels Over Tuskegee, now in its second year at The Actors Temple Theater. The event will be hosted by NBC News correspondent Mara Schiavocampo.
This has been a pivotal year for National Action Network as the organization marked its 20-year anniversary in April with a successful convention that included a keynote address by President Barack Obama. The Keepers of the Dream Awards honored Earvin "Magic" Johnson, Samuel and Latanya R, Jackson; Jim Brown, NFL Hall of Famer, Amer-I-Can Foundation, and others. There were remarks by Dr. William Cosby. The Triumph Awards are being held the same month that the founder and president Reverend Al Sharpton marks his 57th birthday and the launch of his daily television show on MSNBC "Politics Nation."
