Roles in CRIME AND PUNISHMENT:

RASKOLNIKOV (20-30, male)

Rodion Romanovich Raskolnikov: A poverty-stricken student.  Young, handsome and intelligent,
with a propensity toward moodiness, deep depressive anxiety and arrogance. The combination of these traits, alongside his extreme poverty and a certain sickness of spirit, spawns his obsession with justifying his murder of Katherine Ivanovna. Raskolnikov is also capable of extreme generosity and compassion, and tends to pity the weak and helpless. This capacity for goodness signals that all is not lost.

SONIA/OTHERS (30s, female-must be able to play a range that includes characters from 20s to 60s. Needs a potential for both an angelic quality, and a peasant coarseness.)
Plays the following Characters:

Sofia Semianovna Marmeladov (Sonia): Young and pale, with a meek disposition. She has become a prostitute in order to earn money for her destitute family. Lowly in social stature and appears to be easily abused, but has tremendous moral solidity.

Alyona Ivanovna: A pawnbroker, and Raskolnikov's intended murder victim. Bitter, suspicious and exploitative. She has a reputation for abusing her stepsister Lizaveta.
Pulcheria Raskolnikov: Raskolnikov's mother. Pulcheria lives on a small pension, which she borrows against to help her son.

Lizaveta: Alyona's step-sister, and Raskolnikov's second and unplanned murder victim. Awkward, shy and feeble-minded.

PORFIRY/MARMELADOV (40s-60s, male)
Plays the following Characters:
Porfiry Petrovich: A seasoned and clever police inspector who suspects Raskolnikov and guesses his motive. He is highly intelligent and has an uncanny ability to read people and solve crimes.
Semion Zakharovich Marmeladov : Sonia's father. An alcoholic, former government clerk whom Raskolnikov meets in a bar. Pathetic, well aware of the futility of his state.

Roles in AN EMPTY PLATE IN THE CAFE DU GRAND BOEUF:
VICTOR - Perhaps 50.  Ideally, but not necessarily, a big bull of a man.  Traveler, romantic, and lover of food and Hemingway.

CLAUDE - Headwaiter, late 30's or 40's.  Snobbish and efficient.

MIMI - Waitress, thirties, Claude's wife.  Lovely, sweet and caring.

GASTON - Chef, 40's or 50's.  Intense about food.

ANTOINE - Waiter-in-training, early 20's.  Bumbling and nervous.  Must play a musical instrument (not necessarily well)

Miss BergeR - Perhaps 40.  Victor's beloved. Elegant and mysterious.
