One of BAX's longest-running programs, the Space Grant Program is designed to give Brooklyn based choreographers, playwrights, and multi-disciplinary artists the opportunity to create new work in a setting that is conducive to working deeply and exploring new territory. Each year, BAX awards 6-7 Space Grants to dance and theater artists. Each is awarded up to 70 hours of free rehearsal space through a competitive panel process to develop new work. Space grantees have the choice of two work periods: the Summer which has no performance component, and the Fall which culminates in December's PERFORMANCE & DISCUSSION SERIES.

Join us as these artists take their new works-in-development from the studio to the stage. These evenings are designed to offer both artists and audience the opportunity to exchange their impressions of the work. After the artists show their excerpts (up to 20 minutes each), they return to the stage for a moderated discussion that delves into their intentions and inspirations, and the audience's perception.

About the Artists:

Vanessa Anspaugh is a choreographer and performer originally from Los Angeles, CA. She is working on Casey, Cassidy Cassandra..., a new piece which explores the back-body and alternative ways for the arrangement of space as people and collaborators are more integrated and less hierarchical.

Corinne Donly is a theatre-maker, teaching artist, and arts administrator. She is also the founding member of The Patterns Project, a performance research group. She graduated in May 2007 from NYU with degrees in English and Acting, having trained at Stella Adler and the Experimental Theatre Wing. Donly presently teaches play-making and acting skills to NYC high school students through the organization Opening Act. Her latest project, Wild Whore Says: "Couldn't Drag Me Away," is an original play for two men and two mares.

Devynn Emory is a choreographer and dancer originally from Philadelphia. Works under Emory's company name Devynn Emory/ Beast Productions have been shown in Philadelphia, New Haven, London, and New York. In this new work, with a focus on the duet form, Emory will be continuing the exploration into the ideas of what are called "perfect imperfections" - math, patterns, rhythms, and hidden human behaviors -- a concept the company has been developing for the last 8 years.

BAX/Brooklyn Arts Exchange is a professional community arts center located in Park Slope, Brooklyn. Artist opportunities include the Artist in Residence program, the Space Grant program, the Subsidized Rehearsal Space Rental program, Professional Development Workshops for Artists, and more.
