Since 1991, BAX's Artist In Residency and Space Grant programs have served as the core of its work with artists. In response to each artists' needs, BAX tailors individualized plans that incorporate the artists' experiences, goals and questions. The organization has been fortunate to continually expand these programs, from two artists in 1991, to 18 in the 2012-13 season. But not only has BAX increased the number of artists it serves in this capacity, it has also increased the number of rehearsal space hours and stipend, thanks to the generous supporters who see the value of the work BAX does.

The AIR program provides participating artists with one to two years of uninterrupted artistic, technical, and administrative support, as well as the rehearsal space and guidance necessary to take chances, refine their craft and expand their horizons.

Resident artists have the use of four spaces suitable for theater, dance and performance work and are offered up to 200 hours of free rehearsal space (per year), a stipend, formal presentations of new works and works in progress, and administrative and technical support. Opportunities are also available to curate, teach in the public schools, and to work with BAX's student population.

The Space Grant Program is designed to give choreographers, playwrights, and multi-disciplinary artists the opportunity to create new work in a setting that is conducive to working deeply and exploring new territory. Recipients receive free rehearsal space in one of BAX's fOur Studios.

BAX is offering four different types of Space Grants:

SUMMER SPACE GRANT -- 85 hours, Work Period only.

The Summer Space Grant is ideal for the Brooklyn-based dance or theater artist who already has a performance commitment for Fall 2011 OR an artist who is embarking on a research period for an upcoming work and does not wish to present.

FALL SPACE GRANT -- 85 hours, Work Period followed by a showcase performance.

The Fall Space Grant allows Brooklyn-based dance and theater artists an opportunity to perform the work they have developed in front of an audience at the conclusion of the rehearsal process in a showcase format with a post- performance discussion.

NEW THIS YEAR: PARENT/CHOREOGRAPHER SPACE GRANT -- 40 hours and childcare stipend, Work Period only.

This pilot program is an initiative by BAX/Brooklyn Arts Exchange, funded in part by The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, that has been developed to address some of the needs of NYC choreographers who are trying to meet the challenges of being an artist and a parent to newborn through pre-school age (0-4) children.

NEW THIS YEAR: ALUMNI ARTIST SPACE GRANT

-- 50 hours each, one Summer work period only, one Fall work period followed by a showcase performance.

As young artists that have gone through our Youth Education programs, complete college, move back to NY, are now creating work of their own, it became apparent to us that BAX should be there for this next stage of their careers.

Founded in 1991, BAX/Brooklyn Arts Exchange is a is a multi-faceted community performing arts center located in Park Slope, Brooklyn offering an annual presenting season, artist services, and educational programs for youth and adults. BAX receives support from city, state and national public and private foundations. Our programs have been featured in several Brooklyn, NYC, and national publications, celebrating our continued support of artists of all ages.
