Ballet West makes its celebratory return to NYC with two New York premieres: Resident Choreographer Nicolo Fonte's powerful Fox on the Doorstep and Val Caniparoli's dynamic Dances for Lou. Both works had world premieres at the National Choreographic Festival this past May and were hailed by audiences and critics alike as exciting new additions to the Ballet West repertoire. The program will be rounded out by The New York premiere of Gerlad Arpino's final work Ruth, Ricordi per Due, created shortly before he passed away, the principl pas de deux and variations from from George Balanchine's lush Chaconne, and a preview excerpt by Spanish choreographer Africa Guzman her full ballet will premiere as part of Ballet West's upcoming 2018 National Choreographic Festival.
"We are thrilled to return to The Joyce," said Artistic Director Adam Sklute. "Unique and inspiring new creations by great choreographers have become one of the hallmarks of our repertoire, and we are proud to present them to New York audiences. I also hope New York will appreciate our commitment to the work of George Balanchine, which holds such a strong historical place with Ballet West. As well as my small personal nod to Gerlad Arpino"
The cost of the tour has been partially underwritten by a lead gift from the Quinney Family. "The Quinney Family are longtime friends of Ballet West. We are most grateful for the multi-generational relationships with the family and the collective vision we share for the Company," said Sklute. Speaking on behalf of the family, Frederick Q. Lawson said, "This tour to New York is a most exciting opportunity for Ballet West, and will once again show to the world the beauty, grace, and talent we exalt in Utah."

Ballet West, the premiere ballet company of the Intermountain West, has earned international reputation for artistic innovation and excellence since its founding in 1963. For more than 50 years, the Salt Lake City-based Company has entertained and excited audiences in its home state and worldwide by presenting great classical ballets, historical masterpieces and new cutting-edge creations with only the highest artistic and professional standards. The Company continues to build future ballet artists and audiences by providing classical ballet training through its four Ballet West Academy training venues - the Jesse Eccles Quinney Ballet Centre; the Peggy Bergmann Ballet West Academy Park City; the Barbara Barrington Jones Family Foundation Ballet West Academy at Thanksgiving Point; and at Trolley Square in Salt Lake City. Ballet West also offers outstanding education and outreach programs each year to hundreds of thousands of children and adults around the state of Utah.
The Joyce Theater Foundation (Executive Director, Linda Shelton ), a nonprofit organization, has proudly served the dance community for over three decades. Under the direction of founders Cora Cahan and Eliot Feld, Ballet Tech Foundation acquired and The Joyce renovated the Elgin Theater in Chelsea. Opening as The Joyce Theater in 1982, it was named in honor of Joyce Mertz, beloved daughter of LuEsther T. Mertz. It was LuEsther's clear, undaunted vision and abundant generosity that made it imaginable and ultimately possible to build the theater. Ownership was secured by The Joyce in 2015. The theater is one of the only theaters built by dancers for dance and has provided an intimate and elegant home for over 400 U.S.-based and international companies. The Joyce has also presented dance at Lincoln Center since 2012, and launched Joyce Unleashed in 2014 to feature emerging and experimental artists. To further support the creation of new work, The Joyce maintains longstanding commissioning and residency programs. Local students and teachers (K-12th grade) benefit from its school program, and family and adult audiences get closer to dance with access to artists. The Joyce's annual season of about 48 weeks of dance now includes over 340 performances for audiences in excess of 150,000.
Lead support for The Joyce Theater Foundation has been received from LuEsther T. Mertz Charitable Trust.
The Joyce Theater Foundation gratefully acknowledges Doris Duke Charitable Foundation for its generous endowment to support dance performances at The Joyce Theater. Additional support has been provided by the Lila Wallace-Reader's Digest Endowment Fund to encourage the performances of out-of-town companies at The Joyce Theater.
The Joyce Theater's Engagement Assistance Program is made possible by The New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and The New York State Legislature; and is supported, in part, by public funds from The New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, in partnership with the City Council with special thanks to Council Member Corey Johnson.
Major support for The Joyce has been provided by Doris Duke Charitable Foundation, Ford Foundation, Howard Gilman Foundation, The Harkness Foundation for Dance, The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, The Fan Fox and Leslie R. Samuels Foundation, The SHS Foundation, and The Shubert Foundation.
