After a successful run at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival this su m - mer, peer - reviewed rapper Baba Brinkman is bringing his latest hip - hop comedy show, Rap Guide to Consciousness, to the SoHo Playhouse.
From March 1st through April 29th, this limited run will be a chance to see the genre - bending show that Broadway Bab y calls Mind - blowingly, awe - inspiringly good. When trying to achieve a greater understanding of who we are, most people turn either to science or art. In Rap Guide to Consciousness, Baba Brinkman turns to both. Inspired by the works of noted cognitive psychologists ( his wife, Dr. Heather Berlin and TED Talks star Anil Seth ), this show finds Baba exploring the scientific study of consciousness and the inner - workings of his own psyche.
As a scholar, he evokes contemporary theories about the brain's role in forming our sense of self. As an artist, he deploys complex rhyme schemes, irreverent humor, boom - bap hip - hop music, and captivating visuals to come to terms with what this means for him and for all of us : Is our experience of the world real Are we anyt hing more than organic robots What is it like to be a baby Or an octopus The result is a show that is truly one - of - a - kind, confronting both the absurdity and profundity of human experience.
Rap Guide to Consciousness opened in Edinburg to great acclaim, with the Ed Fringe Review calling it Genius ... something very special indeed. Baba then took the show to London, where the Evening Standard advised, Exercise any free will you have and buy a ticket. Now, Baba is bringing Consciousness to the Big Apple, and is excited to have the historic SoHo Playhouse as a home, and playhouse AD Darr e n Lee Cole as the director. The show was made with support from the Sackler Centre for Consciou s ness St u dies, the Anthropocene Institute, and the Canadian Core for Neuroet hics. Baba's shows have been wowing audiences and critics alike since his Drama Desk - nominated Rap Guide to Evolution was named astonishing and brilliant by the New York Times.
His Rap Guides have earned critical raves for their melding of theater, hip hop, comedy, and mind - boggling science. With subjects ranging from religion to climate change, Baba combines the immediacy of a one - man show with the h u - mor, wit, and excitement of a rap concert to create an experience that defies genre classifications, a whole new species of theater. His performances are provocative and entertaining, and peer - reviewed by some of science's leading minds, from NYU Psychologist Jonathan Haidt to NASA's Gavin Schmidt. His shows hold up to the standards of the most discerning s cholars, while never losing the engagement of theater fans.
