Avenue Q will break a 62-year-old record tonight when it becomes the longest-running show in the history of the Golden Theatre. Friday evening will mark its 1,296th performance on Broadway. The show opened on Broadway on July 31, 2003 to much acclaim.
Winner of three 2004 Tony Awards, including Best Musical, the show will replace previous record-holder
Angel Street, a thriller that opened in 1941 and closed in 1944.
Avenue Q concerns a group of purpose-seeking people and puppets who live on the street of the title.
On Sunday September 10, the cast of
Avenue Q will appear in Times Square to perform the musical's opening number, "It Sucks to Be Me" at "Broadway On Broadway."
Avenue Q features Tony-winning music and lyrics by Robert Lopez and Jeff Marx, and a Tony-winning, book by Jeff Whitty
. It is directed by Jason Moore. The show features two
members of the original cast -- Jennifer Barnhart and Rick Lyon -- joined by
Mary Faber, Evan Harrington, Ann Sanders, Howie Michael Smith and Haneefah
Wood.A production of the musical recently opened in London's West End at the Noël Coward Theatre in June. The show also played an engagement in Las Vegas.
