Variety has reported that the Australian High School Musical-Live on Stage Tour has ended soon after it hit the road, with the producers pulling the plug just three weeks after its December 18th start.

The tour will close up shop on January 25th, four weeks ahead of the originally scheduled February 22nd closing. Variety reveals that all tickets are selling for A$30 (US$21), less than a third the cost of regular theatre tickets in Australia.

High School Musical Co-producer Kevin Jacobsen blamed the current economic climate and that it was not financially viable to keep the show running.

A return engagement of "Priscilla Queen of the Desert the Musical" in Sydney also stumbled and fell short of expectations late last year.

"Wicked"  continues to be a hit in Melbourne, but High School Musical-Live on Stage never caught one with audiences.

Press notes describe the show as "Troy Bolton, the popular captain of the basketball team and Gabriella Montez, the brainy and beautiful member of the academic club, break all the rules of the East High society when they secretly audition for the leads in the school's musical. As they reach for the stars and follow their dreams, everyone learns about acceptance, teamwork and being yourself".
