Six free events at the David Rubenstein Atrium this August include a Mostly Mozart Talk with Mark Morris, a concert by Burnt Sugar, Arkestra Celebrating the Legacy of Prince, and Gloria Steinem hosting a talk that follows the screening of a documentary about assault in the military presented by VICE Media Watch & Learn: VICELAND's WOMAN

Brasil SummerFest: Deltas

The group Deltas creates an instrumental sound that flows between the U.S. Mississippi delta and the Capibaribe delta of Brazil. Reaching deep into the roots of the blues and baião, and performing on a wide range of instruments, such as the Turkish baglama, the melodica, and guitars with open tuning, Deltas explores sounds and rhythms of the two regions and creates original material from the elements and emotional resonance that they share.

Alsarah & The Nubatones

Arooj Aftab

Alsarah & The Nubatones were born out of many dinner conversations between Alsarah and Rami El Aasser about Nubian "songs of return," modern migration patterns, and the cultural exchanges between Sudan and Egypt. A common love for the richness of pentatonic sounds, and shared migration experiences expanded the conversation to include Armenian-American oud player Haig Manouki and French-born, Togo-raised bass player Mawuena Kodjovi. The Brooklyn-based group's sound has been dubbed "East African retro-pop."

Singer Arooj Aftab processes the Sufi tradition through contemporary production, presenting a dynamic ambient soundscape incorporating subtle electronic undertones and a free-style approach to sonic matter reminiscent of jazz improvisation. Her signature vocal style-ethereal and transcendent-is grounded by classical training in Lahore. The Brooklyn-based artist collaborates with a diverse range of musical artists. Through original interpretations and detailed arrangements, Aftab soulfully revives classical Urdu Thumri, Khaya, and Kafi meditations on love, yearning, and the divine on her debut album, Bird Under Water.

Monday, August 15 - FREE - at 7:00 pm

The WQXR Classical Moonlighters Competition Winners' Concert

On May 6, some of the best undiscovered classical musicians around New York City competed live in The Greene Space at WQXR for the station's first ever classical music competition for amateurs. A panel of celebrity judges-pianist Alessio Bax, Brentano String Quartet cellist Nina Lee and Roomful of Teeth founding member Dashon Burton-chose the three grand-prize winners in each category. The winners included The Memianni Piano Trio (13-18 age group), Sarah Lucero (19-34 age group) and the Violas of Camerata Notturna (35+ age group). This event will be hosted by WQXR's Elliott Forrest.

A New York Public Library/Mostly Mozart Trivia Concert

International Contemporary Ensemble, host

What happens when the expert curators and archivist of The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts plan a night-cap with performers from the Mostly Mozart Festival? An imaginative, arts-focused, fun-filled trivia night. Led by hosts from ICE (the International Contemporary Ensemble), this interactive evening features live music, prizes, and a trivia competition, where the library's unparalleled collection of composers' manuscripts, choreographic notes, and costume designs inspire every question.

Mehmet Polat Trio

The Mehmet Polat Trio is a spiritual yet adventurous meeting of three virtuosos of magical instruments: ney, kora, and oud. With roots in Ottoman, ancient Anatolian, Balkan, and West African music traditions, the trio entices listeners with its musical authenticity. The original compositions are colored by daring improvisations and grooves, performed in a chamber-music setting. The Mehmet Polat Trio leads a musical journey from the traditional past to an innovative present.

Mark Morris and Ara Guzelimian will talk about Morris's beloved addition to the Mostly Mozart canon: Mozart Dances, which is being revived this summer for four performances on the tenth anniversary of its premiere at the Mostly Mozart Festival.

VICE Media Watch & Learn: VICELAND's WOMAN with Gloria Steinem | USA: Assault in the Military

In this episode of the acclaimed new VICELAND series WOMAN, executive producer and host Gloria Steinem and an all-female team of journalists investigate the troubling prevalence of sexual assault in the U.S. military. Stay after the screening for a live talk-back with Ms. Steinem, host and interviewer Katherine Keating, and VICE journalists.

Also at Lincoln Center this August is Lincoln Center Out of Doors, one of the country's longest-running free outdoor summer festivals, runs through August 7th.
