Audrey Boreyko Conducts NY Philharmonic in Two Programs, Now thru 1/25

Andrey Boreyko will return to the New York Philharmonic to conduct two weeks of performances highlighting Russian music as well as seldom-performed works. In the first program, Mr. Boreyko will conduct Stravinsky's The Song of the Nightingale; Mozart's Bassoon Concerto, with Principal Bassoon Judith LeClair; and Zemlinsky's The Mermaid, Fantasy for Orchestra, on Thursday, January 15, 2014, at 7:30 p.m.; today, January 16 at 11:00 a.m.; and Saturday, January 17 at 8:00 p.m.

Mr. Boreyko will also lead Tchaikovsky's Suite No. 3, featuring Concertmaster Glenn Dicterow in concertmaster solos; Stravinsky's The Song of the Nightingale; and Mozart's Bassoon Concerto with Ms. LeClair on Wednesday, January 22, 2014, at 7:30 p.m. The following week, Mr. Boreyko will lead the Orchestra in an all-Russian program featuring N. Tcherepnin's The Enchanted Kingdom; Shostakovich's Cello Concerto No. 1, with Gautier Capuçon as soloist in his Philharmonic debut; and Tchaikovsky's Suite No. 3, spotlighting Mr. Dicterow, Thursday, January 23, 2014, at 7:30 p.m.; Friday, January 24 at 2:00 p.m.; and Saturday, January 25 at 8:00 p.m. Both Stravinsky's The Song of the Nightingale and Zemlinsky's The Mermaid are based on fairytales by Hans Christian Andersen. The Song of the Nightingale evokes the composer's score for the ballet The Firebird, based on a Russian fairytale; Tcherepnin's Enchanted Kingdom, featured on Mr. Boreyko's second program, began as music for The Firebird before the composer ultimately recommended Stravinsky to score the ballet instead. This program will mark the Philharmonic's first time performing Tcherepnin's The Enchanted Kingdom.
