Recognizing excellence in High School theater, auditions for the 2010 Globe Honors competition will take place on May 1 at The Old Globe. Semifinalists and finalists will perform on The Old Globe Stage on May 17 at 8:00 p.m. The evening will conclude with the announcement of the Globe Honors winners and an award ceremony. Winners of the annual competition will receive scholarships and the Leading Actor and Actress winners will receive an all expenses paid trip to New York City to compete in the National High School Musical Theatre Awards (NHSMTA) to be held June 28 at the Palace Theatre on Broadway.
High School students may compete in five categories:
Outstanding Achievement, Leading Actor in a High School Musical;
Outstanding Achievement, Leading Actress in a High School Musical;
Outstanding Achievement in Musical Theater;
Outstanding Achievement in Spoken Theater; and
Outstanding Achievement in Technical Theater.
Students must be currently enrolled in grades 9 - 12 in a public, private, charter, or home school in San Diego County. To audition for the Leading Actor or Actress in a High School Musical categories, students must have played the lead in a musical production at their school during the 2009 - 2010 school year. (High School productions must open by June 1, 2010.) The Musical Theatre, Spoken Theater and Technical Theater categories do not require school performances. Participants must be residents of San Diego County and have a minimum 3.0 grade point average.

Students from over 30 San Diego High Schools competed in the 2009 Globe Honors competition. Last year's winners were Emma Stratton, from Canyon Crest Academy and Chauncey Matthews, from San Diego School for the Creative and Performing Arts. Emma and Chauncey traveled to New York City to compete with 30 other students from around the country for the Jimmy Award, named for legendary Broadway theater owner and producer,
James M. Nederlander. Winners are selected by a panel of industry experts and receive four-year scholarship assistance to attend NYU's Tisch School for the Arts Department of Drama contingent upon acceptance into the program.
