Asian American Arts Alliance Announces Lunar New Year Celebration Image

The Asian American Arts Alliance welcomes guests to celebrate the Year of the Pig with a unique, performative Lunar New Year dinner celebration on Monday, February 25, 2019 from 6:30 to 8:30 pm. The Alliance will host a Lo Hei (or Yusheng) dinner, also known as a Prosperity Toss, to bring in good wishes for the coming year. Lo Hei is a Cantonese-style raw fish salad popularized in Singapore and Malaysia. For this communal ritual, each Lo Hei ingredient is introduced with a saying symbolizing a wish for the new year, culminating in all participants shouting wishes and tossing the ingredients with chopsticks--the higher your toss, the higher your fortune's growth.

Yusheng literally means "raw fish" in Mandarin, but the word "fish" is commonly conflated with its homophone "abundance." Therefore, Yusheng is considered a symbol of abundance, prosperity, and vigor.

Emcee Kate Rigg (Slanty Eyed Mama) will lead participants through the Lo Hei/Yusheng ritual in a fun and festive performance.

Tickets include Prosperity Toss, buffet (non-fish options available), and open bar.
Individual tickets are $88; VIP tables for ten are $1,000. Tickets and tables may be purchased online at https://www.tickettailor.com/events/asianamericanartsalliance/229306 or by calling the Alliance at (212) 941-9208, extension 5.

Host Committee (list in formation): Phil Chan * J.D. Chang * Marion Chin * Amy Hau & Fred Hansen * Jules Kim * Min Ho Lee * Athena Robles & G. Richard Dodge, Jr.
