Artadia: The Fund for Art and Dialogue is delighted to announce the participants of its 2013 Artist in Residence program. The three-month residencies in New York are hosted in partnership with the International Studio & Curatorial Program (ISCP).
Bernard Williams (Artadia Awardee 2001 Chicago) and Deva Graf (Artadia Awardee 2004 Chicago) will be in residence at the ISCP this fall, September 1 - November 30. Eileen Maxson (Artadia Awardee 2004 Houston) and D-L Alvarez (Artadia Awardee 2013 San Francisco Bay Area) will be in residence at the ISCP this winter, December 1 - February 28, 2014.
This program, which was open to all Artadia Awardees, is a groundbreaking addition to Artadia's commitment to individual artists and is the first of its kind in New York for US-based visual artists. The Artadia Artist Residencies are made possible with crucial seed funding from the National Endowment for the Arts.
The artists-in-residence were selected by two internationally prominent jurors-Laura Hoptman, Curator, Department of Painting and Sculpture, The Museum of Modern Art; and K8 Hardy, Artist, New York, following an in-depth review of applications.
"The Artadia residency in New York City is an incredibly valuable asset for artists at this time," said jury member K8 Hardy. "I was honored to get the chance to help decide which artists would get this opportunity. It's a benefit to all of us to have thoughtful, critical, and non-market artists continue to thrive in this city. This is a city where people's work grows and changes, friends critique you in your studios, and visits from curators keep you on your toes. I can't wait to see how these artists grow."
Executive Director Carolyn Ramo stated, "We are so pleased to be partnering with ISCP to host four artists-in-residence that represent the diverse and vibrant talent of the country. As the only domestic residents in ISCP's program, Artadia awardees will not only be able to make new work and connect with the New York community, but engage in an international dialogue."
The Artadia artists-in-residence have access to a 250 ft² studio, participate in all ISCP programs, and receive a generous stipend to cover housing, materials, a per diem, and round trip travel to New York. ISCP (www.iscp-nyc.org) has 35 studios with an annual participation of approximately 75 artists and five curators from all corners of the globe. The Artadia residencies are designed to seamlessly integrate with the ISCP program including studio space, a minimum of four guest critic visits, field trips, public exposure through the bi-annual Open Studio program, and potential exhibition opportunities with co-hosts in the New York City area.
Generous support for this program has been provided by the National Endowment for the Arts, Artadia's board of directors and supporters around the country.
Artadia supports visual artists with unrestricted awards and connections to a network of opportunities, while providing local communities with national exposure. By awarding significant financial awards to artists, Artadia establishes a strong new incentive to support artistic excellence.
Artadia was founded as The ArtCouncil in 1997 by investment banker and art collector Christopher E. Vroom. Artadia is active in Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Houston, and San Francisco and has awarded over $3 million to more than 250 artists. Once an artist receives an Artadia Award, he or she receives a lifetime of support. In 2009, Artadia launched a residency program, which brings Artadia Awardees from each of its program cities to New York for a 3-month residency at the International Studio and Curatorial Program. Artadia inaugurated a biennial publication and an exhibitions exchange program. Last year, Artadia opened an exhibition space in DUMBO. Artadia presents over 20 events annually around the country, which are intended to demonstrate the tremendous creativity in partner communities and facilitate exchange and dialogue nationwide.
