Exhibit: "Number Six: Flaming Creatures"

Named after the movie "Flaming Creatures" (1963) by US producer Jack Smith (1932-1989) - a controversial, campy underground pop film that inspired generations of artists, including Any Warhol, Robert Wilson, Cindy, Sherman, John Waters, and Mike Kelly - this video showcase features works by John Bock, Lizzie Fitch, Birgit Hein, Mike Kelley, Paul McCarthy, Bruce Nauman, Tony Oursler, Paper Rad, Peaches, Aura Rosenberg, Ed Ruscha, Jack Smith, Gwenn Thomas, and Ryan Trecartin.

This comprehensive exhibit of works by Wolfgang Tillmans, considered one of his generation's most influential photographers and the first non-British artist to be awarded the Turner Prize in 2000, includes paintings; table installations, videos, and art books will also be displayed. Every visitor at K21 receives a book designed by the artist with the price of admission.

Many of the sculptors who taught and studied at Düsseldorf's renowned long-established "Kunstakademie" (Academy of Art) since 1945 have greatly influenced today's art scene. Showing selected works by some 50 artists, the academy's sculptor, professor and director Anthony Cragg presents an impressive panorama of modern sculpting from an insider's point of view.

A new production of Richard Wagner's "Tannhäuser and the Singer's War at the Wartburg" premiers under the musical direction of Axel Kober. Directed by Burkhard C. Kosminski, Swedish Tenor Daniel Frank will be making his debut in Germany as Tannhäuser; première on May 4, 2013, further performances up until June 2, 2013.

Düsseldorf's 21st Annual Jazz Rally

More than 85 concerts on 35 stages turn Düsseldorf and its "longest bar in the world" into a major annual jazz destination. It's a smorgasbord of styles where attendees can concert-hop on one ticket and enjoy the short distances between venues. More than 300,000 international attendees over the festival's three days of international jazz-related performances are expected.

The iconic fashion designer to the stars, considered the last of the great old-school couturiers and dubbed "King of Cling" for his revolutionary 1980's stretch designs, is paid homage by Düsseldorf's NRW Forum exhibit of his best designs from the last decade.

The exhibition shows a glimpse of the vibrant young art scene in Brazil. The featured artists (Tatiana Blass, Marcelo Cidade, Adriano Costa, Jonahas de Andrade, Chelpa Ferro, Mauricio Ianes, Renata, Lucas, Paulo Nazareth) are already well known in Brazil, but not yet in Germany.

The annual "Open Source Festival" (OSF) features independent club music innovation in all day and night events in fascinating locales. OSF has developed into one of Europe's most important international dance music events, this year featuring US indie stars "DinosaurJr," "GLASPER EXPERIMENT," and Yaslin Bey aka "Mos Def" among this year's headliners.

A new three-part ballet evening premiers with choreographies by Jerome Robbins ("Afternoon of a Faun"), Hans van Manen ("Without Words") and a debut by Martin Schläpfer ("Nacht umstellt") set to music by Franz Schubert and Salvatore Sciarrino.

The term "Capitalist Realism" was coined by artists Gerhard Richter, Konrad Lueg, Sigmar Polke and Manfred Kuttner in connection with their own exhibition in Düsseldorf in 1963. Though only used for a short period by these artists, "Capitalist Realism" soon came to represent a specific style of art in the German post-war era, and to date still generates much controversy. The exhibition documents the central shows and campaigns.

Exhibit: "Alexander Calder - Avantgarde in Bewegung (Avant-Garde in Motion)"

Alexander Calder is considered one of the great American masters of the 20th century. The exhibition looks at his shift from static works to abstract 1930/40s mobile sculptures which move with air currents. His works were created in a potential conflict with the geometrical paintings of Piet Mondrians and playful abstractions by Joan Miró and Hans Arp. The exhibition explores Calder's connection with European avant-garde through other works such as films and avant-garde music.

Exhibit: "Candida Höfer. Düsseldorf"

This retrospective commemorates the 70th birthday of Candida Höfer, whose creative work is closely linked with the city of Düsseldorf. Around half of the works have never been published or on display before, and some of the photos were specifically taken for the exhibition.
