Ars Nova presents, as part of the Out Loud series, a FREE reading of: SKI DUBAI by Laura Jacqmin, directed by Laura Savia. The cast includes Gbenga Akinnagbe, David Wilson Barnes, Purva Bedi, Dana Eskelson and Karla Mosley.
Still reeling from the destruction of her New York City apartment by a construction crane, Rachel begins a job as the environmental friendliness consultant on a new development project in Dubai: a perfectly circular island awash in hotels, luxury shopping centers, and enormous homes. In a land filled with startling contradictions, Rachel attempts to make her new life "nice." But being an American abroad has always meant complications, and home can be a difficult thing to define.
Laura Jacqmin's plays have been produced and developed with Steppenwolf Theatre Company, 2econd Stage Theatre, The 24 Hour Plays Off-Broadway, and the inaugural NNPN University Playwrights Workshop at Stanford University, among others. Jacqmin is the recipient of the 2008 Wasserstein Prize (a $25,000 award for emerging female playwrights) and a 2009 MacDowell Fellowship. From 2007 to 2008, she was a contributing writer for The Onion A.V. Club, and will be the artist in residence at Milwaukee's Center on Age and Communtiy this fall. Ski Dubai was originally developed and produced in Steppenwolf's 5th Annual First Look Repertory of New Work (2009). Jacqmin earned a BA from Yale and an MFA from Ohio University.
Laura Savia has directed productions for The Pink Campaign on Broadway, the Williamstown Theatre Festival Workshop, the 24 Hour Plays, At Play Productions, and NYU, as well as readings for 2econd Stage, Atlantic Theater Company, Babel Theatre Project, HotINK, and others.
