The internationally acclaimed singer/songwriter and actress Mira Awad premieres "Arabic Fusion" at the Metropolitan Room on Monday April 30 at 9:30pm, her first New York solo appearance of the year and her Metropolitan Room debut.
Singing songs that reflect her unique perspective as a Palestinian Arab citizen of Israel, Mira weaves together her passions for folk, rock and traditional Middle Eastern music. The result is a unique tapestry of sounds and songs (many of which are original) in English, Arabic and even Hebrew.
Mira recently shared the stage with Achinoam Nini (Noa) in a one-night-only concert at Jazz at Lincoln Center. Both singers, individually and together, are passionately committed to the cause of equality and peaceful co-existence between Israel's Jewish and Arab citizens.
Born in Rameh in Galilee to a Palestinian father and a Bulgarian mother, Mira stars on one of Israel's most popular television shows, Arab Labor, a comedy that tackles the thornier aspects of Jewish and Arab co-existence. She has also appeared on stage in musicals like "My Fair Lady," in concert, and again on television in a hotly contested season of Israel's version of Dancing with the Stars. Her debut solo album, "Bahlawan-Acrobat" was released in 2009.
With Noa, Mira represented Israel at the Eurovision Song Contest in Moscow in 2009, performing their hit song "There Must Be Another Way" for a huge, international television audience. Their appearances throughout Israel and Europe, and in India this past summer have attracted worldwide attention.
"Mira Awad: Arabic Fusion Music" performs one-night only, Monday April 30 at 9:30pm, at the Metropolitan Room, 34 West 22nd Street (between 5th & 6th Avenues). There is a $20 music charge and a two-drink minimum. For reservations call 212/206-0440 or to order online visit www.metropolitanroom.com.
