The Drama League today announced the launch of their 2017 Artist Residency Programs, opening applications to theatre directors and their collaborators to create new plays, musicals, performance pieces, hybrid works, and devised Theatre Projects. Applications are now available at www.dramaleague.org or directly at bit.do/residencies. The deadline for completed applications is Noon (12pm) on Thursday, November 10, 2016.

In its first three years of offering developmental theatre residencies, The Drama League has helped nearly sixty new works take their next steps to productions, including The TEAM's Roosevelvis (COIL Festival, Royal Court), Ripe Time's The World Is Round (B.A.M.), Georama (Repertory Theatre of St. Louis), The Upper Room (New Ohio Theatre), and Piehole's Hand Foot Fizzle Face (JACK), to name but a few. The residency opportunities - which support projects in early, mid, and late stages of development - offer financial support, rehearsal space, producorial mentorship, and more. Among The Drama League's many offerings, there are also separate residencies that specifically develop work by women writer-directors and devised theatre makers. Partners include the Williamstown Theatre Festival, the LaGuardia Performing Arts Center, and is funded in part by the Harold and Mimi Steinberg Charitable Trust.

"As resources to support new visions for the theatre continue to dwindle nationally, it is imperative that new pathways are created to sustain early and mid-career directors and creators," said Drama League Executive Artistic Director Gabriel Stelian-Shanks of the new initiative. "Since 2013, dozens of plays and musicals -- featuring hundreds of artists -- have found a nurturing home with The Drama League. We can't wait to find those promising new pieces that we can help in 2017."

The Drama League of New York, since 1916, has been at the forefront of the American Theatre community, providing talent, audiences, and prosperous support. It is one of the nation's oldest continuously-operating, not-for-profit arts advocacy and education organizations. Through its programs, initiatives and events, The Drama League serves over 3,000 artists and 15,000 audience members each season with over 150 events and programs.
