Antenna International announces that it has produced the audio for The Museum of Modern Art's new self-guided audio tour of Harlem, a companion to One-Way Ticket: Jacob Lawrence's Migration Series and Other Work, on view now through September 7, 2015. The tour guides smartphone users through key Harlem landmarks and institutions from the 1930s and 1940s, the period during which Jacob Lawrence began his career as an artist.
Jacob Lawrence was just 13 years old when he moved to Harlem in 1930, by which time it had become a major center of Black culture as a result of the Great Migration: the movement of millions of Black Americans leaving the poverty and segregation of the rural south in search of opportunities in the factories of the industrial north beginning around World War I. The tour explores places that were important to Jacob Lawrence's life and career, and works of art created by other artists Lawrence knew.
Antenna producers weaved together archival audio of Jacob Lawrence, interviews with key cultural leaders who contribute to Harlem's cultural vibrancy today, and on-location recording and writing to offer a site-specific narrative that captures Lawrence's story.
Avra Rice was interviewed at The New York Urban League, an institution located in the same building since the 1920's, making it one of the few historic places that can be seen almost exactly as it was at that time. Other interviews from Leah Dickerman, curator of One-Way Ticket, Thelma Golden, Director and Chief Curator, The Studio Museum in Harlem; Sharifa Rhodes-Pitts, author; and Elinor Tatum, Editor-in-Chief, New York Amsterdam News, complete the narrative and leave participants with a deeper appreciation for the artist, his era, and Harlem itself.
"We wanted to offer visitors the chance to experience these audio artifacts in the context of his place and from the perspectives of those important to him and to his community," said Jessica Taylor, VP Experience Design at Antenna International. "Harlem became a part of Jacob Lawrence and Jacob Lawrence became a part of Harlem. This tour is an opportunity to step out of the gallery and into the environment and community that shaped his work."
