Through October 31, Sanguine Theatre Company will accept submissions for Project Playwright, its annual new play initiative. The winner of Project Playwright receives a fully-produced world premiere of their play in New York City as a part of Sanguine's 2018 season. Now in its 8th year, Project Playwright promotes the discovery of new and unheard voices, and solidifies Sanguine Theatre Company's commitment to the complete theatrical process, from page to stage.
From the hundreds of annual submissions, Sanguine's literary team determines 3-6 finalists, announced in December. In January, Sanguine Theatre Company will produce a festival evening of staged readings in New York City with excerpts of the finalists' scripts. Each excerpt is assigned a director and team of actors, and the audience votes on the winning script.
Before submitting, each playwright is asked to read the guidelines and agreements, which can be found on Sanguine's website (direct link: http://www.sanguinenyc.org/how-to-apply). The entry fee for the competition is $5.00, processed by Stripe via an online submission form. Questions can be directed to projectplaywright@sanguinenyc.org.
Project Playwright has showcased 33 finalist playwrights, over 25 emerging directors, and dozens of talented New York City actors through the annual festival evenings. Previous winners include: Jessica by Patrick Vermillion (2017), Primary by Gracie Gardner (2016), the lighthouse invites the storm by Josh Drimmer (2015), Flamingo by Alex Trow (2014), EXIT 27 by Aleks Merilo (2013), Bees and Lions by Sarah M. Duncan (2012), and Cary's Chain Store Massacre by W.M. Akers (2011).
