Summer Garden Concert Series

Annette Aguilar's Latin Brazilian Jazz Group

For the second evening of the summer garden series with the Union Settlement Association we are taking a trip to Latin America and Brazil with multi-percussionist, recording artist, educator, producer, bandleader and three-time serving Latin Jazz Ambassador Annette Aguilar.

At sixteen, she was recognized for her percussion playing and began sitting in and performing with internationally renowned Latin artists the Santana Band, Cal Tjader, and Pete an Sheila Escovedo. Aguilar earned a Bachelor in Music from San Francisco State University, a Masters from Manhattan School of Music, and Masters in Music Education at CUNY. She has worked in Grammy Award-winning Broadway shows and currently serves as principal timpanist for the Bronx Symphony.

In 1992, she formed her Latin and Brazilian jazz group, Annette A. Aguilar & StringBeans. StringBeans soon became a popular fixture of the New York City's East Village and Lower East Side music scene. A three-time selection as Latin Jazz Ambassadors by the U.S. State Department, the Kennedy Center and Jazz at Lincoln Center, the group has toured South Africa, Rwanda, Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania and Madagascar, sharing their knowledge of music from the Americans and the Caribbean. www.aguilarstringbeans.com

Tireless arts advocate, producer, and overall Harlem arts legend Voza Rivers has pumped life and music into Harlem with his work in theatre, music, dance, visual arts, film, television and everything in between.

Presently, Rivers is Chairman/CEO VOZ Entertainment Group, Executive Producer/Founding Member of New Heritage Theatre Group, Co-Founder/Executive Producer of IMPACT Repertory Theatre, Executive Producer of Harlem Week and the Harlem Jazz & Music Festival, Co-Chairman of Community Works and Chairman of the Harlem Arts Alliance. As Executive Producer, Rivers produces all of the major events for Harlem Week, the Harlem Jazz & Music Festival and the National Black Sports & Entertainment Hall of Fame Annual Gala. In his prolific career so far Rivers has produced award winning works on Broadway, at The Schomburg Center, Jazz at Lincoln Center, the Apollo theatre and worked with countless artists including Nina Simone, James Brown, Ray Charles, the Count Basie Orchestra, Tony Bennett, Max Roach, Celia Cruz and more.

The Summer Garden Concert Series is a collaboration between the National Jazz Museum in Harlem and the Union Settlement Association.

The Union Settlement Association is an on-the-ground resource for East Harlem residents of all ages, and a passionate advocate for the needs of underserved communities.
