Andrew Lippa's New Musical THE MAN IN THE CEILING, John Doyle-Helmed AS YOU LIKE IT and More Slated for Bay Street Theater's 2017 Season

Bay Street Theater has announced the three productions planned for the 2017 Mainstage Summer Season.

The first will be the World Premiere of the musical THE MAN IN THE CEILING (May 30 - June 25) book by Pulitzer Prize winner Jules Feiffer, music and lyrics by Andrew Lippa, based on the novel The Man in the Ceiling by Jules Feiffer, and directed by Jeffrey Seller. The second will be INTIMATE APPAREL (July 4 - July 30), by Pulitzer Prize winner Lynn Nottage, directed by Bay Street's Artistic Director Scott Schwartz. The third production will be AS YOU LIKE IT (August 8 - September 3), by William Shakespeare, directed by Tony Award winner John Doyle and will be a co-production with Classic Stage Company in New York City.

In the Musical Comedy, THE MAN IN THE CEILING, Jimmy Jibbett someday will be an artist! But for now he is a flop as a boy: a disappointment to his father, a daydreamer in the classroom and a failure on the ball field. Can he find happiness as a boy cartoonist? A Pulitzer Prize cartoonist joins a Tony-nominated composer and the producer of Hamilton to find out.

INTIMATE APPAREL tells the story of Esther Mills, a skilled African-American seamstress who has her own successful business in 1905 making lingerie for both society ladies and "ladies of the night." But Esther is lonely, and as she searches for something more in her life, she finds intimacy comes in many forms, from a poetic love with George, a handsome Caribbean laborer working far away on the Panama Canal, to complicated friendships with the different women in her life, to the most unlikely connection of all, a growing bond with Mr. Marks, a Hasidic shopkeeper, who shares his exquisite finds of fabrics and maybe something deeper.

In, AS YOU LIKE IT, join Rosalind, one of Shakespeare's greatest women, as she travels into the merry Forest of Arden leaving behind the politics of the city. Disguising herself as a man and accompanied by her cousin Celia and Touchstone the clown, they embark on a hilarious and romantic journey where she finds love, laughter, and maybe even herself. Shakespeare's beloved comedy will be brought to joyful new life in a music filled production directed by Tony Award winner John Doyle.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS:

Jules Feiffer has won a number of prizes for his cartoons, plays, and screenplays, including the Pulitzer Prize for editorial cartooning. He illustrated the children's classic, The Phantom Tollbooth. His books for children include The Man in the Ceiling, A Barrel of Laughs, A Vale of Tears, I Lost My Bear, Bark, George, and Rupert Can Dance. His plays and screenplays include Little Murders, Carnal Knowledge, Grownups, and Popeye. He lives in Shelter Island, New York.

Andrew Lippa is a prolific, award-winning American composer, lyricist, actor, conductor, and producer. Perhaps best known for his work on Broadway, in 2015 Lippa wrote the hit song "Evil Like Me" featured on the Disney Channel's hit musical film, Descendants, and performed by his frequent collaborator, Kristin Chenoweth. His acclaimed Broadway credits include his Tonynominated score for The Addams Family; his adaptation of the Tim Burton film Big Fish; music for the Aaron Sorkin play The Farnsworth Invention; and new songs and arrangements for the 1999 Broadway revival of You're A Good Man, Charlie Brown, including the modern-day musical theater standard, "My New Philosophy." He also produced You're A Good Man, Charlie Brown's original cast recording, for which he received a Grammy Award nomination. His other notable works include: The Wild Party; John & Jen; A Little Princess; and his epic oratorio I Am Harvey Milk. For television, he shared a Daytime Emmy Award for his work on the popular children's series "The Wonder Pets" on Nickelodeon.

Jeffrey Seller is the winner of four Tony Awards for Best Musical: Rent (1996), which also won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama; Avenue Q (2004); and In the Heights(2008) and his Tony award-winning newest musical, Hamilton, opened August 6, 2015 at The Richard Rodgers Theatre. Avenue Q is still running in its 12th year in New York City. Jeffrey also produced De La Guarda (1998), Andrew Lippa's The Wild Party (2000), Puccini's La Boheme directed by Baz Luhrmann (2002), High Fidelity (2006), West Side Story (2009), and The Last Ship (2014). He directed the new musical Fly at Dallas Theatre Center (2013).

Lynn Nottage is a Pulitzer Prize winning playwright and screenwriter. Her plays have been produced widely in the United States and throughout the world. They include Sweat; By The Way, Meet Vera Stark; Ruined (Pulitzer Prize, OBIE, Lucille Lortel). INTIMATE APPAREL (American Theatre Critics and New York Drama Critics' Circle Awards for Best Play) is being worked on by Nottage and composer Ricky Ian Gordon to adapt the play into an opera commissioned by The Met/LCT.

Scott Schwartz is the Artistic Director at Bay Street Theater. On Broadway, he directed Golda's Balcony, and Jane Eyre (co-directed with John Caird). Off-Broadway work includes Murder for Two, Bat Boy: The Musical (Lucille Lortel and Outer Critics Circle Awards, Outstanding Off Broadway Musical; Drama Desk Award nomination, Outstanding Director of a Musical), tick, tick...BOOM! (OCC, Outstanding Off Broadway Musical; Drama Desk nomination, Outstanding Director of a Musical), Gigantic (Vineyard), The Foreigner, Rooms, Kafka's The Castle (OCC nomination, Outstanding Director of a Play), and No Way to Treat a Lady. Recently, he directed the US stage premiere of Disney's The Hunchback of Notre Dame at La Jolla Playhouse and Paper Mill Playhouse. He is a member of the Stage Directors and Choreographers Society and a graduate of Harvard University.

John Doyle (Director). John is the Artistic Director of Classic Stage Company where he has directed Passion, Allegro, Peer Gynt and the current production ofDead Poets Society.
