The Wonderful Wizard of Odd

In The Wonderful Wizard of Odd, six clowns perform scenes from the 1939 classic film The Wizard of Oz with a 21st- century update. Through silliness, song, and utter confusion, the clowns discover what it means to be a performer, clown, and human being in 2013. By throwing back the curtain, they reveal the truth about the wizard and this classic tale that rings true today.

Heartbreak Country: Michael John LaChiusa's Stories of America

The critically-lauded musical theater composer/lyricist is best known for his Broadway show The Wild Party, and Off-Broadway's Giant, and Queen of the Mist, as well as for his collaborations with Audra McDonald. For this not-to-be-missed concert he brings along Kate Baldwin, Sherry T. Boone, Marc Kudisch, Bryce Ryness, Andrew Samonsky, Emily Skinner, and Mary Testa to sing his compelling songs. Art Song on Film: Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau

The first installment of Great Performers' four-part film series of extraordinary singers presents Bruno Monsaingeon's documentary Autumn Journey, a portrait of baritone Dietrich Fisher-Dieskau. With substantial performance footage and conversations, the film is accompanied by excerpts from a 1959 recital of Schubert songs with pianist Gerald Moore.

Gérald Caillat's documentary Elisabeth Schwarzkopf: A Self-Portrait is the featured film on Program 2 of this film series. It explores one of the most important lieder interpreters of the post-war years. Schwazkopf performances of Strauss songs, with Gerald Moore at the keyboard, follow the documentary.

Program 3 features German mezzo-soprano Christa Ludwig singing Brahms lieder with Leonard Bernstein at the piano, followed by American soprano Arleen Augér in a live recording of songs by Mozart, Wolf, and Strauss. The program concludes with soprano Lucia Popp in Strauss' Four Last Songs with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.

The final program in Art Song on Film surveys the artistry of bass-baritone Thomas Quasthoff, who retired from the stage in early 2012. Components include a recent master class on Schumann lieder, two Brahms songs accompanied by pianist Hélène Grimaud, and orchestrated Schubert lieder with the Chamber Orchestra of Europe.

The Great Performers 2013-2014 Virtuoso Recitals series focuses on four world-class pianists. Christian Zacharias, "Possessed of effortless technique and a huge intellect" (Philadelphia Inquirer), is the second artist to be featured in the series (Murray Perahia appears in March and Stephen Hough in April). A Van Cliburn Competition winner, Zacharias has a long association with the Mostly Mozart Festival. He also balances a dual career as soloist and conductor by serving as Principal Conductor of the Orchestre de Chambre de Lausanne and the Gothenburg Symphony.

The Songs of Henry Krieger

Composer Henry Kreiger is a six-time Tony Award-winner for his blockbuster Broadway show Dreamgirls and writer of the musical score for The Tap Dance Kid. He also wrote the music for the much-acclaimed Side Show, which was revived this past fall in LaJolla, CA, and then moved to the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC. The Songs of Henry Krieger features Erin Davie, Charity Dawson, Darius de Haas, Joshua Henry, Matthew Hydzik, Rebecca Luker, Emily Padgett, Alice Ripley, Keala Settle, and Lillias White.

Beth Orton

British-born singer/songwriter Beth Orton is a pioneer in "folktronica," a genre that bridges acoustic song and digital dance beats. Her six CDs have earned her a reputation for a voice described as "a gorgeous instrument" by The Washington Post, and her American audience has grown with the use of her music on TV shows including Charmed and Grey's Anatomy.

Jason Samuels Smith & the Owen "Fiidla" Brown Quartet

"Transformation: Rhythm's Roots"

This is a first, highly-anticipated collaboration between Emmy Award-winning tap dancer Jason Samuels Smith and the noted musicians of the Owen "Fiidla" Brown Quartet. The work is based on the rhythmical and creative elements rooted in the African-American experience, and is a musical response to the acclaimed film, 12 Years a Slave.

William Hooker: Body and Soul by Oscar Micheaux

The kinetically charged percussionist William Hooker leads his ensemble in an original score to accompany the screening of Oscar Micheaux's controversial 1925 film, Body and Soul. Featuring Paul Robeson in his screen debut, the film addresses issues of race, crime, and sexuality, and will be followed by a Q & A with Hooker and film enthusiast Chris Sampson.

Aoife O'Donovan

"I'm trying to access human emotion and capture it in song" is how singer/songwriter Aoife O'Donovan describes her sharply etched stories of loss and longing. Her silvery vocals can be heard on The Goat Rodeo Sessions, a CD recorded with cellist Yo-Yo Ma and bassist Edgar Meyer, and O'Donovan has also been a regular guest on public radio's Prairie Home Companion. At this concert she'll sing selections from her recent CD, Fossils.

Ann Harada is currently giving "a hoot of a performance" (NY 1 News) in Rodgers and Hammerstein's Cinderella as the evil stepsister Charlotte, but fans may remember her better as the heavily accented Japanese therapist in the hit show, Avenue Q. She also appeared in the Dolly Parton musical 9 to 5 and on the TV show Smash. Here's an opportunity to sample her wild comedic talents up close on The Allen Room stage.

Paths to the Summit

Paths to the Summit is a specially commissioned work that brings together Grecian scholar Dr. Kyriakos Kalatziades and the Greek and early-Byzantine music quintet, En Chordais, with Canadian Kiya Tabbassian and his Renaissance music group, Constantinople Ensemble. Paths to the Summit explores early Mediterranean music as well as original compositions inspired by their acclaimed Journeys of Marco Polo project. The evening will feature music played on early European instruments including the lute and viola da gamba, as well as Middle Eastern instruments such as the setar from Persia and the tombak.
