The American Museum of Natural History will have the biggest middle school science expo in NYC. It will feature over 300 science projects.
WHEN Today, June 9, 1 to 4 p.m. Photo Op is 1 to 2 p.m.
WHAT More than 500 public middle school students from all five boroughs of New York City will show off more than 300 of their best science projects across a wide array of disciplines during a major science expo celebrating the conclusion of the successful eighth year of Urban Advantage: Middle School Science Initiative.
Hailed as a national model, this pioneering education program has helped thousands of 7th and 8th graders pursue authentic scientific investigations at eight science-rich New York City institutions, including the Museum, and complete their science exit projects, a requirement of the NYC Department of Education for advancement to high school. This year Urban Advantage was also introduced in 6th grade in 69 middle schools.
The projects covered a variety of topics, including:
· comparing the levels of exercise fatigue experienced by men and women
· investigating the effect of music on plant growth
· observing the surfacing behaviors of sea otters
· discovering the effect of zebra mussels on the Hudson River ecosystem
· predicting how gender and race effect prevalence of asthma and kidney disease
