NYC diversified Italian immigrant Amanda Spilinga's dance style. Now she is diversifying dance itself.
The 29-year-old travelled to NYC from Italy seven years ago as a trained ballerina and contemporary dancer. Her passion for the traditional styles met their match when Amanda discovered the street style of dance in the city.
Just as city segregation irked her, she could not separate these two styles on her plate. So mix them she did. Cross-producing traditional and street movements, Amanda presents Alternative Synergy - a blend of contemporary and street style dance - not to mention the NYC-based company showcasing it all, Alternative Synergy The Company (ASTC).
Founded in 2017 ASTC consists of an assortment of dancers and cultures, with backgrounds of dance in contemporary and street style, including hip hop, popping, litefeet, yoga and house; and cultures ranging from Italian, Greek, Nigerian, American, Taiwanese, Thai, Singaporean and more.
The Alternative Synergy dance style consists of movements that are not only fluid, reflecting contemporary, but also free-form, reflecting street style. They are the first type of movements of its kind. So much, that they don't even have a name yet.
ASTC had its sold out debut show this past summer. After fan-like responses poured in, they knew this company was meant to stay.
Now, they are vigorously practicing for their second show, showcasing on Saturday, December 22, 2018, in NYC at Mark O'Donnel Theater (160 Schermerhorn St, Brooklyn, NY 11201 from 7:30-10p.m.
A show which needs financial support (for lights, costumes, sound quality and more), which is why they are asking for donations through their Fractured Atlas page and website.
