From July 14th through July 31st, Gateway Playhouse presents a sinfully entertaining evening with the fourth show of its 61st season, the Off-Broadway phenomenon, Altar Boyz. The show is making its Long Island premiere, after running for an astounding 2,032 performances over the course of 5 years in New York City and winning the 2005 Outer Critics Circle Award for Outstanding Off-Broadway Musical. Book by Kevin Del Aguila with music and lyrics by Gary Adler & Michael Patrick Walker. Conceived by Marc Kessler & Ken Davenport. Altar Boyz has touring productions all over the world, throughout the United States, Korea, Hungary, Finland, Australia, Montreal, and the Philippines.
Altar Boyz is a musical-comedy spoof about a fictitious Christian boy-band on the last night of their national "Raise the Praise" tour. The "Boyz" are five ultratalented heartthrobs from Ohio. As they perform their signature hits featuring lyrics like "Girl, you make me wanna wait" and "Jesus called me on my cell phone", soul-wrenching secrets come tumbling out with hilarious results. With their sweet harmonies, sinfully spectacular dancing and an unnerving sense of fashion, the Boyz are destined to rock the masses!
Gateway's production features Joey Khoury (Matthew), Wade Elkins (Abraham), Ryan Nearhoff (Luke), Jeff Leatherwood (Mark), and Spiro Galiatsatos (Juan). Directed and Choreographed by Carlos Encinias, Musical Direction by Justin S. Fischer, Produced by Paul Allan, Casting by Robin Joy Allan and Associate Jessica Harrison. Production designers include David Korins (Set Designer), Doug Harry (Lighting Designer), and Ivy Conyers (Assistant to Lighting Designer).
Altar Boyz will be at Gateway Playhouse in Bellport from July 14th through July 31st. There are shows on Tuesday through Friday at 8PM, Thursday matinees at 2PM, and an additional matinee at 2PM on Wednesday July 28th, Saturday at 3PM and 8:30PM, and at 7PM on Sundays, with a show at 2PM on Sunday July 18th.
