Celebrated pianist, songwriter, arranger, producer, Crescent City's own Allen Toussaint will be the headliner for Lincoln Center Out of Doors' "Roots of American Music" concert in Damrosch Park on Saturday, August 22. Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Toussaint has been a major force on the American music scene since the 1960s, reaching into R&B, soul, pop, country, blues and jazz, producing and writing material for artists ranging from Dr. John and the Neville Brothers, to Patti LaBelle, Irma Thomas, Paul McCartney and Paul Simon.

His songs have been covered by the Rolling Stones, the Yardbirds, Bonnie Raitt, Boz Scaggs, Al Hirt and Glen Campbell, to name a few. Among the hit songs he's authored or produced: "Working in the Coal Mine" (Lee Dorsey); "I Like it Like That" (Chris Kenner); "Right Place Wrong Time" (Dr. John); "Lady Marmalade" (Labelle); and "Yes We Can Can" (The Pointer Sisters). His post-Katrina CD collaboration with Elvis Costello, The River in Reverse, was nominated for a Grammy Award. Toussaint just completed a sold-out run at the Village Vanguard in conjunction with the recent release of his new album, Bright Mississippi (Nonesuch), his first solo album in 10 years. Of that engagement, The New York Times wrote, "It wasn't a re-creation of old New Orleans music but a reverie on a New Orleans heritage: a lifetime of memories refined by a genteel sensibility that finds the elegance in the blues." Like Odetta, Allen Toussaint defies categorization spanning the breadth of American popular music.

Bob Dylan called him "King of the folk singers," Ramblin' Jack Elliott, is one of the last of the giants of the folk revolution of the late 1950s, 1960's and early ‘70s. He joins the "Roots of American Music" line up on August 22 for the "In the Spirit of Odetta" concert. Elliott, originally from Brooklyn ran off to join a rodeo at age 14, learned to play guitar from a cowboy, was nicknamed "Ramblin'" by Odetta's mother, and has never looked back Inspired by Woody Guthrie, Elliott traveled and "apprenticed" with him for two years. Later, Elliott, in turn, took Dylan under his wing. Elliott has collaborated with artists from Johnny Cash to Tom Waits, Beck to Bonnie Raitt, Ry Cooder to Bruce Springsteen, the Grateful Dead to the Rolling Stones. He's made more than 40 albums, winning his first Grammy in 1995 and was awarded the National Medal of Arts by President Bill Clinton. His release this past April on ANTI-Records, I'm a Stranger Here Myself, a collection of Depression-era blues classics appeared at #5 on the Billboard chart (a first appearance) for the singer.

Joining the "Roots" line-up on the afternoon of August 23 is Willie Mae Rock Camp for Girls Summer Revue featuring young women, aged 8 to 18, who have participated in summer camps which take place annually in Brooklyn. The concert will feature brand new, all-original songs that range from political satire numbers to irresistible pop masterpieces. Willie Mae Rock Camp for Girls is a non-profit music and mentoring program that empowers girls and women through music education and activities that foster self-respect, leadership skills, creativity, critical thinking, and collaboration. The camp is named after Willie Mae "Big Mama" Thornton, a blues and rock performer/songwriter who was one of the first women to play the music that came to be known as "rock n' roll." The performance will take place at 2 p.m. on Hearst (formerly North) Plaza. http://www.williemaerockcamp.org/

?ABAKUÁ Afro-Latin Dance Company's program on August 9 is finalized and will feature:

Island Fever - a signature work by choreographer Frankie Martinez, Island Fever is a euphoric piece that celebrates the beauty of a simple life, living connected to the soil of the Caribbean; it draws upon numerous Caribbean folkloric dance traditions.

After Hour Funk - harnesses the energy and influence of urban culture (in particular New York City) on Latin dance and music, with an infectious blend of Afro, Latin and Jazz movements, rhythms and sounds.

?Family Day (August 15) now includes Bubble do Beatles: Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, a 30-piece kid-friendly rock orchestra that recreates the era-defining Beatles album that was never intended to be performed live-a perfect opportunity to introduce kids to the fun and complexity of The Beatles' music! The group has performed sold-out shows at Symphony Space, the Highline Ballroom and other well-known venues. http://www.bubbleland.com/bubbeatles.html

?Andy Gonzalez (Fort Apache Band), Jeremiah Lockwood (The Sway Machinery and Balkan Beat Box), and Antibalas Horns are newly-added special guests for August 23 "Roots" concert Mazel Tov, Mis Amigos: The Lost World of Latin-Jewish Sound featuring The Arturo O'Farrill Afro-Cuban Sextet, Arturo O'Farrill, Music Director and arranger, with previously announced guests Larry Harlow and Irving Fields.

?Preston Frank, Creole accordionist of the renowned Frank family, will join the Louisiana Renegades-Christine Balfa (daughter of Dewy Balfa), Dirk Powell and Kevin Wimmer of Balfa Toujours-on August 23 in the "Roots" line-up.

?Program details for Dendy Dancetheater performance on August 15, Damrosch Park: Dendy Dancetheater presents the New York premiere of Preliminary Study for Depth, the upper half of high and low. Study for Depth takes its visual imagery from the ground breaking lithographs of M.C. Escher, the master illusionist of time, objects and space. Dendy explores the themes in Escher's work including evolution, the inner linking of bodies and animals, angels and devils, optical illusions, the play between objects (dancers in this case) and space, infinity, and the cycle of life. Dendy makes reference to images in Escher's work but goes on to apply Escher's aesthetic to the craft of choreography. Ken Wilbur's A Brief History of the Universe has greatly influenced the creation of this piece.

?Program details for Ben Munisteri Dance Projects' performance on August 15, Damrosch Park: Catalog, a world premiere, will feature the music of Radiohead; Tuesday, 4 a.m., set to Stravinsky's Capriccio for Piano and Orchestra, explores the scores' unique polyrhythms and dissonant harmonies while evoking the dreamscapes of its six bedtime inhabitants; and Turbine Mines, which is set to excerpts from Vangelis' foreboding score for the film Blade Runner.

ALL EVENTS ARE FREE and take place on the Lincoln Center campus-Damrosch Park, North Plaza, South Plaza, Josie Robertson Plaza and Broadway Plaza--located between Broadway and Amsterdam Avenues, West 65th Street to West 62nd Street.
