On Sunday, November 11th, Algonquin Theater Productions will present a reading of its new musical, "The Paparazzi", music and lyrics by Al Tapper, book by Tony Sportiello, directed by Tom Herman. Some will walk to see the reading, some will take cars or subways. And some will fly from more than 2500 miles away.
Among those attending "The Paparazzi" in New York will be the director and cast from the recently closed Mexican version of "The Paparazzi" in Guadalajara. It is the first time in history that a Mexican production of an American musical originated in Guadalajara and the international exchange of talent and ideas has infused an energy into the show which might never have happened otherwise.
"I am very happy and excited to hear Paparazzi in its original language and first hand from the authors. When a work is so well written and has such extraordinary music, I am sure it will be a success and it will make the audience vibrate," says Mauricio Cedeno, who directed the show in Guadalajara.
Book writer and Artistic Director Tony Sportiello had the chance to see the musical in Guadalajara. 'The passion and creativity of the Mexican version astounded me. The show was designed for eighteen actors, they used ten. And it looked crowded. The speed and energy that Mauricio brought to the stage were perfect for how we conceived the world of the paparazzi."
Along with Mauricio will be cast members Victor Aceves, Vanessa Arroyo, Sandra Geneviere, Gibran Macias, Blanca Mantoya, Giselle Restelli, Joaquin Romero and Mafer Santes. Giselle Restelli won the Best Actress Award for her role last year in the Tapper/Sportiello show "National Pastime", also directed by Cedeno in Guadalajara.
The American cast includes Dana Aber, Ezekiel Andrew, Al Bundonis, Raquel Cockrell, LR Davidson, David Edwards, Grace Field, Andrew Foote, Ariane Ireland, Ken Jennings, Mary Lauren, Kelli Maguire, Chris McCrewell, Jim Newman, Paige Sommerer, Dan Van Why and Viet Vo. Music direction is by Nissa Kahle, the stage manager is Armelle Kay Harper.
The readings will be held at 305 West 38th Street, Ripley Grier Studio Theaters. The reading on the 11th is at 6pm and the reading on the 12th is at 1pm.
