Alex Nogales Joins State Of The Arts NYC To Talk About The Oscars and Lack Of Latino Nods Image

"For years the success of the major film studios has been won on the backs of U.S. Latinos who represent 23% of all movie-ticket buyers and 18% of the U.S. population," Nogales said. "Yet, on- and off-screen and in the narratives Hollywood's movies tell, Latinos remain the most underrepresented minority in the industry. Enough is enough. It's time to end the whitewashing and put Latinos in front of and behind the camera." - Alex Nogales

State of the Arts NYC is confirming that the Co-Founder of National Hispanic Media Coalition will join our radio lineup this evening. Except for director Guillermo del Torres for The Shape of Water, no other Latino artist has been nominated this year for an Oscar.

Host/Producer Savona Bailey-McClain will ask Nogales how to remedy the disparity. And she will ask how the pending purchased by Maria Contreras-Sweet of the Weinstein with an all female board will change the landscape in Hollywood.

Latinos make up 18% of the U.S. population, but accounted for 23% of all movie tickets sold in 2016, according to the most recent data from the Motion Picture Assn. of America. That statistic, however, has failed to translate into more features centered on Latino stories with Latino actors and/or to more roles that could lead to serious awards consideration. A comprehensive study from USC's Media, Diversity, and Social Change Initiative found that in THE 100 top films of 2016, Latinos were represented by just 3% of speaking parts.

The National Hispanic Media Coalition (NHMC) is a media watchdog for the Latino community, ensuring that Latinos are fairly and consistently represented in news and entertainment and that our voices are heard over the airwaves and on the Internet.

Listen to the entire broadcast on WBAI FM Radio, which includes Delphine Selles-Alvare, Film Curator for ANIMATION FIRST, a new French animation film by the French Institute Alliance Française (FIAF).

Also joining THE LINEUP is Crispian Riley-Smith, Executive Director of Master Drawings 2018, which opens this weekend. Established in 2006, Masters Drawings New York (MDNY) is the pre-eminent event for exhibiting and celebrating old master through contemporary drawings in the United States. Dealers from the United States and Europe showcase their highest quality drawings in galleries along Madison Avenue on the Upper East Side of Manhattan.
