CHINA DOLL starring Al Pacino has recouped on Broadway this week. The new play by David Mamet has recouped its $3.7 million investment costs according to The New York Times.
The play, which follows a wealthy businessman who runs into trouble with his state governor, began with a red-hot box office when it opened in December 2015.
According to The New York Times, lead producer, Jeffrey Richards said he was pleased with the work, which he said had to be revised and improved after its official opening. He said, "It's been ultimately very rewarding because of the work that's been done during the actual run of the play...The ending has been changed by the playwright, and the audiences have embraced it recently, which has been very encouraging."
The play began its limited run on December 4th and is slated to close on January 31st. China Doll grossed more than $1 million during six of its first seven weeks, but dropped significantly after the initial open.
The creative team hopes that China Doll has a post-Broadway life and several theater's across the country have already licensed the show. International productions will hopefully begin next year.
