The Aicon Gallery announces new art exhibits at its studios, located at 35 Great Jones Street in New York.

Home and the World:

Sanjay Bhattacharyya, Sanjeet Chowdhury,

Prabuddha Dasgupta, Jatinder Marwaha, Huma Mulji, Sarah Singh, Manish Swarup and Darshana Vora

Opening January 28th, 2010 6-8pm.

The exhibition takes Rabrindranath Tagore's novel 'Home and the World' (Ghare Baire) and Satyajit Ray's film as its starting point and examines the ways in which artists in India have used photography to capture the state of affairs unfurling in concentric circles from within their most immediate space, and moving outward to the shared environments of the nation and the region. They examine what is at stake in trying to document a country which has quickly moved from independence to being a nascent superpower; where different groups clamor for their own self-determination and the forces of globalization bring both welcome and unwelcome change. Exhibition runs from January 28th 2010 to February 27th 2010.

GENESIS:

An Evening fusing Art and Music

Nitin Mukul and Gregory Reynolds

January 23rd, 2010 6.30-9pm
A pair of films by the NYC based painter, Nitin Mukul, who painted on ice, filmed it melt, and edited the gloriously shifting colors and textures into a hypnotic gestalt, created a transient and mercurial tapestry. These films will be accompanied by live music from Nitin Mukul and Gregory Reynolds, followed by Mukul's music spun on turntables for the rest of the evening. This marks the closing of "Discerning Form" - an exhibition of abstract painters that includes Nitin Mukul's works on canvas alongside master printmaker Krishna Reddy, Baroda based painter Indrapramit Roy and the Bengal School master Ganesh Haloi.
